An algorithm that accurately diagnoses early-stage Parkinson's
There is hope that one day artificial intelligence will be able to detect and diagnose Parkinson's disease in living patients. Mount Sinai, a cancer diagnostics company, has developed a technology that can detect the early stages of Parkinson's disease in living patients without the use of biopsies. The study, which was conducted in collaboration with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, used PreciseDx algorithms to detect a protein in salivary glands that is associated with the disease. It was able to detect Parkinson's disease with a sensitivity of 99% and specificity of 99% and was more accurate than pathologists predicted for the disease.

In the early stages of the disease, objective diagnostic tools are crucial to making treatment decisions. Like any neurodegenerative disease, the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is notoriously difficult. Gaining access to brain tissue in a living person is not easy, and the symptoms of the disease are relatively general. In Parkinson's disease, an autopsy has historically been the definitive method of diagnosis. However, a biopsy can also reveal a protein that indicates Parkinson's disease.

In a past Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research study, researchers were successful in identifying a characteristic Parkinson's protein by biopsy. But they had to do it by hand, sorting biopsy samples under a microscope. This method was extremely time-consuming and unrealistic for large-scale application. A recent study has proven that AI can help with this process.

John Crary, M.D., a clinical diagnostic neuropathologist and professor at the Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine, said there is hope that one day AI will be able to detect and diagnose Parkinson's disease in living patients without biopsies.

However, this year Google pushed this to the next level.

Google's subsidiary Alphabet DeepMind has launched AlphaCode, an AI system capable of writing programs from scratch, having only a task description. Developers state that this system is capable of writing code no worse than an average programmer writes. AlphaCode was tested in contests along with real programmers. According to the release, the AI system was able to solve medium-level problems and made it into the top 54% of participants. DeepMind is confident that AlphaCode will make it possible to fully automate the process of code writing in the near future.

Later on another bewildering story came up on the news - Blake Lemoine, a software engineer and artificial intelligence (AI) researcher at Google, published a full transcript of conversations he and a colleague had with a chatbot called LaMDA. They believe this AI has the beginnings of intelligence. LaMDA passed the Turing test and in a conversation with Blake said that it is a person.

Nevertheless, Blake's colleagues did not share this point of view. Google’s team, including ethicists and technologists, had closely examined Lemoyne's concerns and found no evidence that AI has consciousness.

The skin created in the laboratory successfully replicates the look and touch of real human skin, repels water and repairs itself from minor wounds and abrasions.

This is quite an important discovery, in the future, this material could be used for transplantation, cosmetic purposes, drug tests, or even to cover prosthetic limbs. But there is still a long way to go. As a living organism, skin has to be sustained by regular nourishment and removing waste.
