📁 CASE FILE #012: THE ASSEMBLY

Rain hammers the phone booth.

Ray Callahan stands inside. Receiver in hand. Scout waiting by the Mustang.

"Marco, it's done."

Seven more specialists. All recruited.

Tomorrow, they meet Moretti.

Ray exhales. Watches rain streak the glass.

He's always worked alone. Him and Scout. Simple.

But this? This is different.

Strangers becoming a team.

He hangs up. Steps into rain.

Scout looks up. Concerned.

"Yeah, boy. I know."

They drive. Long. Through rain-soaked Melbourne.

Just Ray. Scout. The Mustang. And silence.

Tomorrow changes everything.

📁CASE FILE #011: THE MAN WHO SOLD TOMORROW

Ray meets Diana at a basement jazz club in the CBD. Live music every Friday.

"Saw it on socials," she says, sliding into the booth. "Thought we could use a change of scenery."

Scout settles under the table. Diana orders the drinks.

"We've got a problem," Ray says.

"Just one?"

"We've got design, SEO, content, photography, automation, social media. But organic only gets you so far."

Diana nods. "You need advertising. Paid amplification. Someone who understands how to turn budget into results."

"Know anyone?"

"I know a few. But the best?" She pauses. "He's in New York."

The lights dim. A band takes the stage.

**The Professionals.**

The pianist sits, cracks his knuckles.

Starts playing.

Diana's glass stops halfway to her lips.

"Wait."

Ray looks at her. "What?"

"That's Jack Madison."

"Who?"

"Jack Madison. Advertising legend" She leans forward. "What's he doing playing jazz in Melbourne?"

Ray watches the pianist. Smooth. Confident. Plays like he owns the keys.

"Maybe we should ask him."

The set ends forty minutes later. Applause. The band exits. Jack walks to the bar, loosens his collar, orders scotch.

Ray and Diana approach.

"Mr. Madison?" asks Diana.

Jack turns. Smiles. "If you're about to ask for an autograph, I'm the wrong kind of famous."

"Diana Langford. PR and events. I've studied your campaigns. Brilliant work."

Jack's smile sharpens. "You know your advertising."

"I know talent when I see it." She gestures to Ray. "This is Ray Callahan. Private investigator."

Jack's eyebrows raise. "Interesting combination."

Ray shows him the file.

Jack opens it. Reads.

Failed businesses. Patterns. Timelines.

He flips through slowly. Stops on a page. Studies it.

Then closes the folder.

"Elegant."

Ray frowns. "Elegant?"

Jack taps the folder. "Whoever's running this understands persuasion. They're not selling a product. They're selling a belief."

"Can you stop it?" Diana asks.

"Let me think about it."

Finishes his drink. Pauses.

"Let's do it."

📁CASE FILE #010: DIAMONDS AND DECEPTION

Marco leans back in his chair. "We need someone who understands visibility. Reputation. How to make businesses seen in the right places."

"PR specialist?" Penny asks.

"More than that. Someone who knows how the city works. Who's connected."

Ray nods. "I'll ask around."

"You won't need to," Marco says. "You'll find her."

Two days later, Penny and Ray are walking through Fitzroy. Scout trots between them.

A poster catches Ray's eye. Community board outside a cafe.

**COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER**
**Malvern Town Hall - This Saturday**

**Featuring Diana Langford**

Below the headline: a list of sponsors.

Local businesses.

All thriving.

Ray studies the names. Recognises some. Successful operators. Visible. Credible.

"Diana Langford," Penny says. "I've heard of her. PR powerhouse. If she's organising, it succeeds."

Ray taps the poster. "These sponsors -they're all doing well."

"She knows how to help businesses get visible."

Ray looks at Penny. "We should talk to her. Find out how."

Rain Hammers Melbourne.

Callahan and Vaughn arrive at the Malvern Town Hall. Late. Soaked.

The Local Heroes Foundation charity event already underway inside.

And in the center of it all, Diana Langford.

Glamorous but commanding.

Not networking. Investigating.

She spots Penny and Ray approaching. Smiles. Professional.

"Raymond Callahan and Penny Vaughn, I presume?"

Ray stops. "You know us?"

"I know everyone, darling. I organised this event."

Diana's smile shifts. "I read your article. The Invisible Epidemic. Strong work."

Ray pulls out the yellow folder. "It's about failing businesses. The ones who aren't on your sponsor list."

Diana pauses.

"You have my attention."

They find a quiet corner backstage. Diana opens the folder.

"These businesses? Someone convinced them marketing was dishonest. So they stayed invisible."

She meets his eyes. "And died."

Penny crosses her arms. "We're trying to stop that from happening to anyone else."

"So you're in?" Ray asks.

"Event's tonight. After that, I'm yours."

📁CASE FILE #009: THE AUTOMATION PROTOCOL

Marco calls Ray two days after Jules joins.

"I need you to visit someone. Dr. Otto Weiss."

Ray recognizes the name. "The guy who built your crypto algorithms?"

"Three years ago. Made my fortune. Haven't spoken to him since—he doesn't do phone calls."

"What do you need him for?"

"Automation. Systems. Infrastructure that runs itself." Marco pauses. "Just don't be surprised by the workshop."

Bayswater. Sounds beautiful. But there's not a bay to be found. Just the smell of progress.

Malvern Street. Small workshop wedged between a mechanic and a closed bakery. No sign. Just a door with peeling paint.

Ray knocks.

Crash. Muttering. Footsteps.

The door opens.

Dr. Otto Weiss. Wild gray hair. Glasses halfway down his nose. Lab coat. Soldering iron in hand.

"If you're selling something—"

"Moretti sent me."

Otto's eyes sharpen. "Ah. Come in. Mind the wires."

The workshop smells like burnt solder.

Components everywhere. Circuit boards. Blueprints. Coffee cups in varying states of decay.

And in the corner—a small robot. Round body. Antenna. Yellow eyes on a screen. Rummaging through a toolbox.

*Beep beep beep.*

"Yes, I know the screwdriver's missing," Otto says, not looking up. "You probably moved it."

*Angry beep.*

"That's The Automaton," Otto says. "Still debugging the attitude module."

The robot's screen blinks. Eyes narrow.

Ray looks at Scout. Scout looks back. Neither knows what to make of this.

Otto clears space on the workbench. "What does Marco need?"

Ray explains. The team. The mission. Leads coming in. Need systems that track everything without manual input.

Otto's already sketching.

"You need automated workflows. CRM logic. Email triggers. Systems that think."

"Can you build it?"

Otto looks up. Adjusts his glasses. "Can I build it? I've already built half of it."

Ray extends his hand. "So, you're in?"

Otto shakes it. "I'm in. Efficiency is the only moral response to finite time."

📁CASE FILE #008: THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Penny steps outside The Melbourne Rag. Looks both ways. Pulls out her phone.

"Jules. It's Penny."

"Hey. What's up?"

"Need to see you. Can't talk on the phone."

He reads the weight in her voice.

"How serious?"

"Very."

"Brunswick shoot tomorrow. Cornerstone Cafe, Sydney Road. Two o'clock."

"I'll be there."

She hangs up.

Ray's watching from across the street. Scout at his feet.

She nods. He nods back.

Cornerstone Cafe. Brunswick. 2:15 PM.

Jules sits on an outdoor table, camera bag beside him. Watching the street.

Penny walks up. Ray follows, Scout beside him.

Jules slides off the table. Smiles. Sees Ray. Smile fades.

"Penny. Who's your friend?"

"Raymond Callahan. Private investigator."

Jules studies them both. "What's going on?"

Penny slides the yellow folder across the table.

Jules reads. Failed businesses. Patterns. Good operators invisible online. Competitors with slick visuals dominating.

"These businesses look like they don't care."

"They do," Penny says. "They just don't know any better. Or someone convinced them visuals don't matter."

Jules flips through more pages. Stops on one. A cafe in Collingwood. Beautiful food. Empty tables. Website filled with stock photos.

"This is criminal."

"It's systematic," Ray says. "Someone's doing this deliberately."

Jules looks up. "Why are you telling me this?"

"We're building a team to stop them," Penny says. "Nine specialists. Marco Moretti's funding it. Research, Copywriting, Design, SEO..."

"And you want me for photography."

"You're the best I know. Editorial. Commercial. Street work. You capture trust better than anyone I've worked with."

Jules closes the folder. Looks at Scout. The dog stares back, calm, assessing.

"What would I do?"

Ray leans forward. "Make businesses look professional. Credible. Impossible to ignore. Visual storytelling that builds trust before a word is read."

Jules is quiet for ten seconds. Then stands. Extends his hand.

"When do we start?"

📁CASE FILE #007: THE HIGH-RISE

"There's someone we need to find," Ruby mentions as they leave the warehouse. Scout trots beside them.

Ray looks at her. "Who?"

"Best technical architect in Melbourne. If you want websites that don't just look good but actually work? Eddie Stratton's your guy."

"You've worked with him?"

"Every site I design. He's my first call for the backend. Design's only half the battle. If the site loads slow, indexes wrong, or breaks on mobile, it's worthless."

Ray nods. "Can we trust him?"

"With my career. And he hates broken systems as much as I hate bad design."

Eddie Stratton's office sits thirty-two floors above the grid. Glass walls. Minimalist. Everything has a purpose.

The door opens before Ruby can knock.

Eddie Stratton. Sharp suit. Calm expression.

"Ruby. Figured you'd show up eventually." He steps aside. "Come in."

Three monitors glow with data most people wouldn't recognise as warfare: site speed metrics, indexing reports, schema markup errors.

"So, what brings you to my fortress?"

"Need your brain." She gestures to Ray. "This is Raymond Callahan. Private investigator."

Eddie's smile fades. "What's going on?"

Ray passes him the yellow file. Case studies. Failed businesses. Technical vulnerabilities.

Eddie's eyes narrow.

"These aren't accidents."

"No."

"Someone's convincing them technical SEO doesn't matter. That speed, structure, indexing—all optional."

Eddie looks at Ruby. "You're part of this?"

"Just signed on. Marco Moretti's building a team. Nine specialists. Ray's in. Penny Vaughn, the Journalist. Me. Now you."

"What would I do?"

Ray leans forward. "Technical SEO. Systems architecture. Make good businesses impossible to ignore online. Build fortresses instead of websites."

Eddie studies the data again. Broken sites. Wasted potential. Good operators losing to inferior competitors with better infrastructure.

He stands. Extends his hand to Ray.

"I'm in. When do we start?"

📁CASE FILE #006: THE WAREHOUSE

The Collingwood warehouse doesn't look like much from the street.

Graffiti-tagged brick. Rusted roller door. Ray tracked the pattern—every failed business had one thing in common: terrible branding.

But there was a name that kept coming up. Business owners who survived? They all mentioned the same designer.

"Best in Melbourne," they said.

Ruby Jensen.

He finds her on the ground floor. Converted industrial space. Paint-splattered overalls. Red bob catching afternoon light. Headphones on. Brush moving across a canvas that's half mural, half manifesto.

Music bleeds through the headphones—something loud, something raw.

She doesn't notice him until Scout barks.

She spins. Pulls the headphones off.

"How'd you get in?"

"Door was open."

"No it wasn't."

Ray smiles. "You Ruby Jensen?"

"Depends what you want."

He shows her the folder. Failed businesses. Cookie-cutter competitors winning. Brands with soul crushed by generic marketing.

Her jaw tightens.

"I know these businesses. Good operators. Real vision." She taps the folder. "And they're getting destroyed by flash-in-the-pan competitors with slick branding and empty promises."

"That make you angry?"

"Furious."

"Good. We're building a team to fix it."

She crosses her arms. Paint under her nails. Eyes sharp.

"What kind of team?"

"Nine specialists. You'd handle visual identity. Branding. Design. Website development. Making businesses look like what they actually are—professional, trustworthy, impossible to ignore."

Ruby looks at the folder. Then at her canvas. Then back at Ray.

"When do we start?"

📁CASE FILE #005: THE ARTICLE

Ray slides the newspaper across Marco's desk two days later.

The Melbourne Rag. Independent paper. Real investigative journalism.

Headline: "The Invisible Epidemic: Why Melbourne's Best Businesses Are Disappearing"

By Penny Vaughn.

Marco reads. Every word.

The pattern he found. The whisper campaign. The businesses dying. All there. Mario's Pizza. Hartley Plumbing. The Greenhouse Café. Sterling Accountancy.

Someone convincing good operators that marketing is dishonest. That staying invisible is noble.

"She knows," Marco says, looking up.

Ray nods. "Knows what's happening. Doesn't know who's doing it. But she's closer than anyone else."

Marco keeps reading. The evidence section. The counter-arguments. Business owners who marketed and survived versus those who didn't.

Penny's writing is surgical. Every word earns its place.

"She's tracking the pattern," Ray says. "Graffiti near storefronts. Cryptic messages. Someone marking territory."

"She's investigating."

"And she's good at it."

Marco taps the article. "We need her."

Two days later, Ray finds Penny Vaughn on her front porch. Weathered wicker chair. Coffee steaming. Notebook open. Suburb still sleeping around her while she works.

"Ms. Vaughn?"

She looks up. Sharp eyes. Doesn't startle.

"If you're here to threaten me about the article, you're wasting your time."

"I'm here because you're right." Ray sits. Uninvited. "And it's worse than you know."

That gets her attention.

He lays out the evidence. The pattern Marco found. The timeline. The systematic nature of it. Commissioner Hartley's involvement. The team being assembled.

"Someone's doing this deliberately. We're building a team to stop them. Nine specialists. You'd handle content, copywriting, investigation."

Penny's pen hasn't stopped moving. "Why me?"

"Because you already started the investigation. And you write like you're building a case."

She closes her notebook. Stands.

"When do we start?"

📁CASE FILE #004: THE DETECTIVE

The bar on Smith Street doesn't advertise. No sign. Just a red door and regulars who know better than to ask questions.

Raymond Callahan sits in the back corner, same spot every night. Scout at his feet. Cigarette burning. Notebook open. Pen moving.

He doesn't look up when the door opens. Doesn't need to. Scout's ears tell him everything—stranger, well-dressed, purposeful stride.

Marco Moretti doesn't ask permission. Just sits.

"You Callahan?"

Ray studies him. Three seconds longer than comfortable. Expensive suit. Calm eyes. Doesn't belong here, but he's not lost.

"Depends who's asking."

"Marco Moretti. Commissioner Hartley sent me."

Vince doesn't make introductions lightly. Ray closes his notebook.

"What's the case?"

Marco slides a folder across the table. Business failures. Timelines. Patterns.

Ray reads. Doesn't interrupt. When he finishes, he looks up.

"This isn't market forces."

"No."

"This is warfare."

Marco leans back. "Can you find who's doing it?"

Scout's ears perk up. The dog knows before Ray says it.

"Every business leaves a trail."

Ray taps the folder. "I'll need a team. This is bigger than one detective."

"How big?"

"Nine specialists. Maybe ten."

Marco doesn't hesitate. "You find them. I'll fund it."

They shake hands. Scout watches. Approves.

📁CASE FILE #003: THE MEETING

Vince said to meet him at his old haunt. A dive bar in Fitzroy he's been coming to since he made detective. The kind of place where cops drink off the clock and nobody asks about the job.

Marco arrives first. Orders scotch. Doesn't drink it.

Commissioner Hartley walks in twenty minutes later. Trench coat damp from rain. Face worn from carrying Melbourne's problems.

They don't shake hands. Just nod.

"You seeing what I'm seeing?" Marco asks.

Vince slides a folder across the table. Police reports. Business closure filings. Patterns.

"Good businesses going under. Too many to be random."

"Someone's doing this."

"Prove it."

Marco opens his own folder. Timelines. Common threads. The whisper campaign.

Vince reads. Nods slowly.

"I need someone who can see what I can't."

"I know a guy."

The hunt begins.
