I just spent a week in local schools talking about illustration. How good are the Prep-Grade 1 kids? Fantastically enthusiastic - they haven't yet left the garden of Eden. I was standing idly, day-dreaming about how things had gone as the kids were leaving, when I felt a pair of tiny arms around my leg. 'Hello, sweetheart - what's you name? 'I LUUUVE drawing,' was all she said - and ran out.' It's enough to melt an iceberg.
Now, kids that I don't even remember, wave to me from strange vehicles, and stop me in the supermarket to tell me about their latest flick-book animation about their dog / cat / horse / Viking / cow-eating-hare-Viking, using Post-it notes. 'Good on you, cobber / mate!' I say, then think, 'Who the hell was that?' All good - and people wonder why anyone would live in a small town. Question of the week from a Grade 4 boy - 'Why DO you like drawing?' Hmmm . . .
