You already know something's off with your website.

You've probably tried to fix it more than once.

The fix usually goes in the wrong direction.

New photo. Different headline. A section moved higher up the page. All ex*****on changes to a problem that isn't about ex*****on.

If your homepage still doesn't land after multiple rounds of tweaking, the issue usually sits one level up: nobody ever decided exactly what the page needed to say, to whom, and in what order, before any of it went on the page.

That's not something a new template fixes. It's something a proper brief fixes, before design even starts.

You can't keep relying on a platform that decides who sees you.

Where your reach could drop overnight for no reason you could point to. Where a feature you've relied on suddenly disappears. Where the algorithm changes the rules mid-game, again.

This is the reality of using social media in your business - the platform controls who reaches you, not you.

Your website works differently though. Not because you magically own the servers it sits on. You don't. I don't. But you do own your conent, and you do own your domain. So if someone has the link, they see your site. No gatekeeper inbetween.

That's the difference - nobody's algorithm decides who gets to see it and who doesn't.

I still use social media. And so should you (IF your audience is on the platform). But I won't build my business foundation on something that can throttle my reach overnight for no reason.

Your website should be your foundation. Social media should just be one of the ways you help people find it.

I can tell you exactly what's wrong with a website in about 30 seconds. Wrong hierarchy, an unclear offer, a call to action fighting for attention with six other things. I've built my whole business on seeing it.

I still don't build my own website alone.

Not because I don't know how. Because I'm too close to it. I know what I meant to say. I don't always know what's landing, because I've written every word of it from inside my own head.

Skill and objectivity aren't the same thing. When it comes to your business, I have both. When it comes to mine? I have plenty of one, and I need someone else in the room for the other.

If you've ever felt behind because you can see what's wrong with your site but can't quite fix it yourself, that's not a skills gap. That's just what happens when you're too close to something you built.

You moved the headline. Changed the photo. Rewrote the same section three times. And your website still doesn't feel right, even though you can't point to anything actually wrong with it.

Here's what I constantly see: people trying to fix a strategy problem with design tools.

New layout, new colours, new photo, same underlying issue.

Because nobody actually decided what the page needed to say before any of it went on there.

A brief isn't a mood board. It's the decision-making that happens before the design does: who the page is for, what you need them to believe, what happens next. And usually, the brief what's wrong: it's missing.

Skip the brief stage, and you get a page that looks considered but was never actually decided.

If you've redesigned your website and it still doesn't feel right, that right there is usually the answer. It was never a design problem.

Outgrowing a website isn't a milestone you hit once you're "big enough". It's smaller than that, and it happens whether or not your business has grown at all.

I've worked with founders whose revenue hasn't moved much in two years, and their website is still completely wrong for them. Repositioned client base, different offer, a version of themselves who talks about the work differently now. Their site is the only thing standing still.

Here's the pattern I keep seeing: none of it feels urgent enough to fix, so it just keeps not getting fixed. Then eighteen months later you're still sending the link with that small flinch.

Most website projects start with a mood board.

Mine start with questions.

What is this website actually for. Who is it trying to reach - specifically. What's the one job it needs to do. What's not working right now, and what's actually causing it.

Only once those answers are clear does the design begin.

"Maybe I'll just DIY it."

I hear a version of this all the time. Usually from someone doing everything else in her business exceptionally well, and still finding reasons not to touch their website.

When I launched Kyah Digital in 2021, I had a similar version of "Maybe I'll just DIY it." I've got the skills, so my version of DIY is different to what yours might be.

But what I didn't have, for the first two years of Kyah Digital, was the time, or the willingness to put my own site ahead of client work. My website ran on a template while I was building custom ones for everyone else.

Same result though: a site that no longer said what I needed it to say, sitting there untouched, because fixing it kept losing to everything more urgent.

Allow me to [re]introduce myself.

I'm Janelle. Website strategist, designer, and copywriter.
