“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”
I want to share a little story from Book Week. My youngest daughter wanted to dress up as a character who was sparkly, bright and happy but couldn’t quite find a book character that felt ‘extra’ enough. Instead, she insisted on writing her own book and basing the character on me, a drag queen, and some of my friends.
Together we had the best time sewing a kaftan in the sparkliest sequin we could find at SPOTLIGHT , brushing up a gorgeous wigsbyvanity.com Dolly wig and painting her little face.
On the drive to school, I asked her how all the drag made her feel. She said, “I feel like me but a bigger me. Not big like grown up but like I can speak up about what I’m thinking and how I’m feeling more. I feel bold and brave to just be me.”
Everyone I know who does drag gets a similar feeling. People who come to our shows get a sense of this too. They walk out feeling like they’ve received permission to live a little larger and little more free.
Drag is as beautiful and innocent as that. Anyone who thinks it’s something sinister is simply projecting their own fears onto something that they know nothing about. They just need to get a life. Preferably one with a little whimsy sprinkled on top.
