AWS Summit is always a whirlwind. Bumping into ex-colleagues is always a pleasure. All of they have grown and flourished. At one point, 7 of the OG AWS Support crew were all together.

The theme was very obviously AI, especially Agentic AI. AWS has manay amazing products, and their customers were showcasing the usage of these Agents and how they help reduce operational load and Incident investigation times. A staggering statistic was around AWS DevOps agent: 84-96% accuracy in Root cause analysis, in minutes, not hours, tested against some of the gnarliest of incidents that were reproduced.

SaaS products are on the rise with the ability to write code fast with AI tooling. Attending many talks around Security and tenant isolation has given me a multitude if ideas that can help our clients achieve their dreams with our Cloud Offerings.

A staff member leaving your business is a security event.

Most businesses treat it as an HR event. Farewell card. Final payslip. Maybe a handover document.

But unless someone has run a proper offboarding process, that person may still have:
- Active credentials to your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace
- Access to shared cloud storage they can download at any point
- Their phone still enrolled in your systems
- Knowledge of shared passwords that haven't been changed

This isn't a commentary on people's intentions. Most departing staff have no interest in causing harm.

But access that isn't closed is a gap and gaps get exploited, sometimes by the person themselves, sometimes by others who obtain their credentials later.

A proper IT off-boarding checklist takes 30 minutes. Most businesses don't have one.

This week is Privacy Awareness Week.

Most businesses treat privacy like a compliance checkbox.

Here's what actually matters and what you can check right now:

1. Do you know where your customer data lives?
Not vaguely. Specifically. Which systems, which staff have access, which third-party apps.

2. Have you reviewed your privacy policy in the last 12 months?
If it still says "we take your privacy seriously" and nothing else, it's not doing its job.

3. What happens when you off-board a staff member?
Are their logins revoked within hours? Or do dormant accounts sit open for weeks?

4. Are you collecting data you don't actually need?
Every piece of data you hold is a liability. Less is more.

5. Do you have a breach response plan?
Under the Australian Privacy Act, you have 30 days to notify the OAIC of an eligible breach. Most businesses have no plan at all.

You don't need to fix everything this week.

But you should know where the gaps are.

It's a trust problem.

Your clients share sensitive information with you because they trust you to protect it. Their financials. Their health records. Their personal details.

Myth: "We're too small to be a target."

This is the most expensive belief in small business IT.

Cybercriminals don't choose targets based on size. They choose based on vulnerability.

Small businesses are frequently preferred targets because:
- They're less likely to have security tooling in place
- They're less likely to detect an intrusion quickly
- They're connected to larger businesses, making them a supply chain entry point
- They're more likely to pay a ransom because they can't absorb the downtime

The ASD's annual cyber threat report consistently shows small and medium businesses as disproportionately affected.

You don't need to be a bank to need basic security hygiene. You need to be harder to hit than the next business.
