You may or may not be aware of the Social Media Senate hearing currently happening in the US.

Finally, there is a collective stand to pass Bills that will force the major social media corporations to make changes that will protect children online from everything from bullying, accessing drugs, explicit content, grooming, and more.

We’ve been watching the Hearing on YouTube and seem to be left absolutely gobsmacked every time.

I strongly encourage all our following parents to watch these videos to get an idea of how dangerous these platforms can be. Please open a dialogue with your kids and discuss these uncomfortable issues. It’s awful that we have to have these chats with kids as we work so hard to protect their innocence!

We’re back in full swing this week, kicking off week 1 with a circuitry project where our kids program an LED module with microbits and a GPIO board!
If you’re interested in coming along we’ve got 3 remaining spots in our Monday class and 3 in our Thursday class hosted at Moreton Bay Boys College; mid-term joins are always welcome!

Our first 2-day code camp is complete and BOY did we cram in some serious coding! We designed and launched rockets, coded games, got into some seriously complex circuitry, python coded drones, navigated mazes with robots, and so much more. What a giggle! Thank you to these awesome little dudes for a great 2 days. Now onto the next group!

Thank you to all the wonderful bayside families who came to our charity coding morning!! We had 4 jam packed classes with kids of all ages who all managed to code an entire game in a 20 minute session!!
Special thanks to Bel Ellis - The Greens and Alex Givney - Lord Mayor's Representative for Wynnum Manly Ward for all their support, help, and encouragement! We’re so lucky to have such wonderful humans in our community.

Dylan and I are off to spend the rest of the weekend with our little bub but I’ll be sure to post again during the week with an update about how much we’ve raised for Variety - the Children's Charity of Queensland!!!

Join us at Moreton Bay Boys' College on Wednesday 18 October at 6pm, for a ThinkUKnow presentation focused on keeping children safe online, with all parents, carers, and teachers invited to attend! 💻

ThinkUKnow Australia is an evidence based education program delivered nationally to prevent online child sexual exploitation.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia. 👮‍♂️

The presentation will be delivered by a local law enforcement member and an industry volunteer. The presentation is pro-technology and addresses topics including self-generated child abuse material, online grooming, sexual extortion, and importantly encourages help seeking behaviour.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology. 📱

For more information, head to thinkuknow.org.au! We look forward to seeing you all there. 👋

🙌🏻 Well, that’s a wrap!! This is the face of a very tired but very happy coder who has just finished her first ever code camp. And what a blast it was! I’m so glad the rain held off for us to let us play outside during breaks, launch our rockets, and fly our drones!

Our kids were absolutely phenomenal from start to finish, and it was a pleasure to be able to see their imaginations at work! Each 2-day group experimented with SIX different technology stacks, and smashed each and every one of them. I loved watching new friendships form, as well as seeing some of our regular kids catch up with each other.

A special thanks to Ryan, our wonderful coding coach, who was the best assistant I could have ever hoped for!

Now to start planning the Summer camps ☀️💻 😱

🚁 Today our incredible kids learned to program flight paths for their drones using Python programming!
🤩 This awesome dude (A STEMLabs Term student as well as a code camp attendee!) decided to take this challenge to the next level and code his drone to fly through an obstacle course!! It was an amazing achievement after watching him spend the afternoon meticulously problem solving, coding, testing, and learning how to read the API.
PS. For anyone concerned; we are wearing safety glasses and the drone is fitted with safety propeller guards 🤓✅

A sneak peak into one of yesterday’s lessons… We learned about G-Force, designed our own rockets, programmed a Micro:Bit and strapped it to the rocket to track acceleration then send the data via radio signal to our Mission Control Micro:Bit… then LAUNCHED THEM!
Ps. I told the kids, no more than 15 air pumps please… I don’t think a single one of them listened to me 🤣 if you listen carefully you will hear Master S counting to 25!! 😂🚀🧨
