Political events in the US have been ‘interesting’ to say the least and it’s been my policy to never offer an opinion on politics. But as someone who has been stage now for a quarter of a century and have passed the official retirement age of 60, I do feel able to comment on ageism.

‘Don’t do a Joe Biden’ one of my neighbours quipped, as I prepared for a recent presentation. It got me thinking as I felt sad and embarrassed for him in recent months which made me contemplate my own performance. It would have been concerning if I hadn’t received standing ovations for 3 of the last 5 events, including an audience under 30 years of age.

Maybe I don’t do quite as many cartwheels on stage these days but depending on the brief, the audience still rocks to my Mick Jagger impersonation, and he’s already over 80 and going strong. Then, there’s David Attenborough who at 97 recently found time to send me a handwritten note in response to my last book ‘The Gift of Nature: Inspiring Hope & Resilience’

What legendary resilience and grace that man has! And we all age differently. So although I nearly quit speaking about 20 years ago when I was heckled with ‘Show us your b***s love’ at 10:30 PM, I have no intention to retire now simply because of a number on my birth certificate and passport.

Speaking of passports, mine is packed to trek the Pakistan Himalayas from August 7-21 so may not reply to emails or what’s app immediately.

‘You’re crazy’ said the same neighbour. ‘Why don’t you just play golf at Noosa like normal people?’

Because…as long as I’m blessed to remain physically and mentally healthy, and feel I can learn from-and contribute to-this weird but wonderful world, I plan to keep imparting whatever wisdom I have gained along the way. (and who knows, I may gain some new material)

Thanks to my hundreds of clients over the years for being part of that journey and since I’ve always offered a 100% money back satisfaction guarantee if I don’t meet the objective of your brief, you can be absolutely certain that if/when I receive bad feedback, I’ll certainly hear you.

‘You can’t drive into the future if you’re looking into a rear vision mirror.’

With rapid change in today’s world, too many people look back on the ‘good old days’, recalling less complicated times. Reminiscing is fine but it’s futile to long for a return to the past, rather than look to the future.

Even with turmoil in today’s’ world, it’s worth remembering to enjoy the present because in a few years, these times will become our ‘good old days’.

The pace of change is unlikely to slow down. It’s equally important to remember that many changes are for the better, not the worse. Yet, we seldom hear anyone lamenting those changes for the good. Some readily complain about a higher utility bill than ‘what it used to be’, but I’ve never heard anyone longing for the good old days, when we didn’t even have electricity or running water?

I recently spoke at an automotive conference and learned that any car built since 1992 contains more sophisticated technology than the lunar space ship that landed on the moon in 1969! And, that a single Pentium chip now has more computing power than what was available to NASA during the entire research and development phases of the space program.

Astronaut, John Glen, provided a wonderful example of not looking backwards, when in November 1998, aged 77, he again circled the globe as he first had in 1962; only in a more sophisticated craft. Likewise, whether in our personal or professional life. Down with ageism!

‘Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve.’ Martin Luther King Jr.

In terms of service to human kind, few of us will ever change the course of history to the degree done by Martin Luther King. Still, this great leader’s words are a reminder that we can, indeed, all be of service to our country, clan, colleagues and customers.

Historically, in Western society, customer service jobs have been regarded as menial tasks. One worked in the service sector, waiting tables or pumping petrol, until they found a ‘real’ job.

Such roles had mistakenly been considered only as a means to an end, rather than worthwhile career paths in their own right.

The dictionary contains two quite different meanings of the word ’service’. One is ‘the attendance of an inferior upon a superior‘. This implies subservience, and few of us wish to be, or be seen to be, as subservient to anyone! Thus, we rightly reject that notion of service.

But, another definition states that service is ‘the act of being useful.’

And, surely we all want to be useful on this planet!
