My professional career in IT, spanning over two decades, has provided me with extensive experience in networking, system administration, and troubleshooting. But my passion extends beyond the workplace. I'm the go-to tech guru for family and friends, always eager to help them navigate the ever-changing landscape of gadgets and smart home devices. This hands-on experience, coupled with my formal IT background, has allowed me to develop a unique understanding of how to integrate technology seamlessly into everyday life. But beyond the technical expertise, I'm a down-to-earth person with a sense of humour in overdrive and a kid at heart. I genuinely love helping people and pushing the boundaries of what's possible with technology. Most break-ins start with something that was simply left open.

Not a forced lock. A roller door up 40cm, a side gate that never latched, a laundry window nobody thought about since morning.

At 9pm, Home Assistant checks the lot. Every door, gate and window sensor, in one sweep. If everything's shut, you hear nothing. If it isn't, you get one message:

"Roller door open, side gate open. Everything else is secure."

One notification, not five. And if nobody's touched the roller door twenty minutes later, the house closes it itself.

The wind picked up at 2pm on a Tuesday. Nobody was home. The blinds went up anyway.

A Melbourne northerly can wreck an outdoor cafe blind in one afternoon, and you usually find out when you pull into the driveway.

Your house can watch the wind for you. When the gusts get to the point where the blinds are at risk, they roll up on their own. Once it settles, they come back down and you get your shade again.

Melbourne gave you one good drying day. Then it changed its mind.

A forecast that says "chance of showers" is useless when the sheets are already out. So the house watches the live rain radar instead. When a cell is tracking towards your suburb, your phone gets the only thing that matters: rain in 12 minutes, washing still on the line.

It knows there's washing out because you flicked a switch when you hung it, or because the dryer never ran.

Twelve minutes is plenty. It's the difference between folding dry towels and starting the whole load again.

At 2am there are two bad options: the full ceiling light, or your shin and the door frame.

After midnight, the hallway lights come up at about five percent. Warm, low, down near the floor. Just enough to see where you're going, not enough to wake anyone or jolt you properly awake yourself.

A minute after you pass, they fade back out.

No phone, no switch, no fumbling for the wall. And during the day those same sensors do nothing at all, because the house knows what time it is.

It's a small thing until you've lived with it. Then you notice every house that doesn't do it.

Most outdoor lights run on a timer. Set it once, and for a few weeks it's about right.

Then the seasons shift. Suddenly you're walking up a dark path in winter, or the lights are blazing in summer while the sky's still bright. So you adjust the timer. Again.

Home Assistant knows the exact moment the sun sets at your address, every day of the year. Lights on at 5:12pm this week. 8:47pm in December. Never a minute early or late.

If you've ever thought about adding automatic lighting at home, you've probably hit the same wall everyone does. Traditional motion sensors just don't cut it.
