Admin Release Countdown: Get Ready for Summer ’23 (May / June 2023)

The next release of Salesforce CRM is coming up. It is important that you look how this can impact your instance and what new features it offers to you and your business.

April 20: Get early access by signing up for a pre-release org
If you want to get your hands dirty without impacting your current instance, you can get a pre-release developer org.

April 26: Review the Release Notes
Search the products you use for release updates in the Release Notes section of Salesforce Help. The notes will go live April 26

May 4 before 5 p.m. PT: Be sure to refresh your Sandbox
Use the Salesforce Sandbox Preview Guide to determine the plan for your sandbox instance(s). Before doing so, make sure that you have no connections that might be part of a bigger test environment.

May 5: Sandbox preview begins

May 15: Learn MOAR about Summer ’23 features

May 19-26: Watch Release Readiness Live by cloud

Permission Setting Changes

Traditionally, there have been several locations in which you could set permissions to access objects and fields in Salesforce.

While not changing entirely, there are changes coming which will move some of the permissions away from Profiles and they will only be available in Permission Sets.

What will remain on a profile
* One-to-one relationships—login hours/IP ranges
* Defaults—record types, apps
* Page layout assignment—The future is App Builder/Dynamic Forms so we will not invest in bringing page layout assignment to permission sets.

What will be available only on permission sets after EOL
* User permissions (system and app permissions)
* Object permissions (object Create, Read, Update, and Delete [CRUD])
* Field permissions (field-level security [FLS])
* Tabs
* Record types (not defaults)
* Apps (not defaults)
* Connected app access
* Apex classes
* Visualforce pages
* Custom permissions

End of Life (EOL) for permissions on profiles is slated for Spring 2026 but will be available in orgs from
Spring 2024, but it is advisable to plan ahead and ensure that you are ready. This is particularly important in large orgs that have several profiles and permission sets to manage and clean up.
