“I was born and grew up in Sydney. When I was six my parents bought The Lass O'Gowrie pub and we made the move up to Newcastle. I spent a lot of time growing up above the Lass. They still own it to this day. It’s home, I work there as well and everyone is super friendly. Everyone looks after each other, it’s a good ‘vibing’ pub. My family are entertainers, it’s in our blood. Mum was a singer and model. I always liked the attention, it's in the genes.

I began modelling at 13 years of age when Harper's Bazaar first discovered me. Mum helped me and drove me down to Sydney there and back every day for while until I moved back down to Sydney at 18. I jumped around a lot, modelling in and throughout Sydney and even worked in Germany for some time. I did this for about ten years. It wasn’t until a few years ago, I came back to the Newcastle Scene and took up Photography, it all just fell into place. Fashion and Photography are all I know.

I was obsessed with Marilyn Munro. I am a big fan. I have all of her movies and she was a big idol growing up. Apart from Marilyn, I can thank my family for where I am now. My best friend, my older sister, has supported me all my life. But my mum and dad are my biggest fans by far. I live for the beach and you probably see that through my photos. I go every day, as soon as I get in the water everything is just amazing! I tend to hang around the Newcastle Kiosk, the guys there is family. I like to get up early, and watch the sunrise.” - Michelle

“I grew up running around barefoot living on an acreage in picturesque Kurrajong in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. My mother was most definitely the most influential person to me as a child. She has always been an all-rounder in life. Intelligent, creative and a doer of things. My mum was a great homemaker and gardener but could also mow a lawn and repair and maintain things around our home as much as my dad did.

When I finished school I didn’t know particularly what I wanted to do with my life and thought I should do something so I went to uni as a teacher with the optimism that I would either love it or find something similar that I love but that didn’t happen. As a result, I left Uni and started working in retail fashion which then lead to studying Visual Merchandising at tafe when I was about 20. What followed was a long career in visual merchandising which I left Sydney to live in Newcastle for a job two years later. Fashion Visual Merchandising is a really physically demanding job and It eventually took its toll on my body and I developed autoimmune issues and had to find something else to do.Over the years, I grew interested in fibre arts like macramé and weaving during an assignment in which we had to make something by hand.

My first Big Macrame commission was for The Impossible Markets at the Edwards Bar. It was an 11-foot wide macramé arch to hang over the garage door entry to the market and took about 20 hours to knot.

My biggest influence through my design and fibre art career has been my design teacher Ana Saiao at ‘Colour Palette’. From the beginning, she has just been unconditionally supportive of me and my work and for some crazy reason believes in me and has convinced me to believe in myself too.
I've been knitting and weaving for about 3 years now. I've also been working for myself colour consulting for private homes assisting with interiors and exteriors for about a year.

I live with my partner Kristy and we have a 4-month-old son Oliver who is the absolute light of our lives. Being able to work from home some days has had its benefits with him being so young. My goal as a parent is to just to have a happy kid. Whatever Oliver does in life is up to him. Ill be happy as long as he does what he loves. Since becoming a mum there isn’t much spare time left these days but every chance I get I just like to be with my little family. I'm a massive home body so ill either be watching movies, weaving or knotting, planning trips overseas or playing with Oliver. “ - Miriam @ MimConcepts Stylist and Fibre Artist

“I was born in Singleton (country lad), spent a lot of my childhood between the south coast around Kiama and Newcastle. As a child, I was a massive sports nut and my father had a huge influence in my sporting life as well as surfing and the beginning of my photography passion.

As I came out of High School I went to Uni for Civil Engineering hoping to span into mining engineering as my Dad was a miner. But quickly got out of that and like most people got my first job in hospitality at a little pizza restaurant. I then went into labouring work, then I got to a point where I wanted something special and meaningful with my life, so I decided to study photography for a year in a Bachelor of Visual Communication majoring in photography which I decided not to finish and leave after a year to pursue my career on my own.

My Father had a camera for his work, which I “borrowed” a lot for surf and landscape photography. I soon stepped away from the surf industry as I didn’t like the mentality and politics behind it. Soon after that, I took a passion for portraits so I pursued a bit of modelling work (which was a worse idea!). After that, I photographed a couple who were good friends of mine for fun and soon realised how awesome it would be to shoot couples, weddings, elopements and just general human connection.

I would have loved to not build up such a huge hex debt for no degrees! Haha. I felt I didn’t learn anything from my attempt at qualifications, even in the design degree. Yeah, it got me inspired, but I learnt everything important and special by going out on my own. Just wish I had the drive to go out and try it by myself earlier!

I have been lucky enough to travel around the world many times, I have been through the UK, Iceland, Fiji, New Zealand, Faroe Islands, Amsterdam, Italy, Poland, Australia, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia and a lot around Australia. But that still isn’t enough! I am heading to Morocco and Canada next year as well as the Philippines the year after.

Unfortunately, I don't get that much spare time. Most of my time when I am not working or at home, I have found myself building new ventures or businesses. I love business and am a huge fan of creating services that help the community and that people love!
BUT, if I do get spare time I love spending it with my family, surfing, adventuring to new locations, hiking and just catching up with mates for a nice ale.

My son, Taj, who just turned 1 in May, is one of my biggest influences. I think my biggest fan would have to be my wife. She loves everything I shoot and to see her reaction to photos I take and how she listens to the way I talk passionately about what I do, I can see she fully understands and supports my journey to better myself every day. Without them, I wouldn’t have the drive to be what I am and pursue new and greater things!” - Joel @ Barefoot & Bearded

“I was born in Armidale and grew up in several towns finally settling in Newcastle. I’ve always had a passion for art but I didn’t really believe I could be an artist so I always had thought of being an art teacher. My year 12 art teacher warned me of that career though (she was probably unwittingly a major influence in my childhood). So I went to Newcastle University and studied fine arts for three weeks, got scared and switched to graphic design. I think if I were to do it all again I would definitely apply to The National Art School or a similar institution dedicated to art and artists. I think there is a lot to gain from the connections you make at university and college. I was also a graphic designer for over 20 years and I had a design business with two of my dearest friend called satellite ink. We had some large blue chip clients and we really loved what we did—for a while…

But, before all of this, I taught aerobics in the late 80’s early 90’s—it was another one of my passions—think leg warmers and g-strings (so grateful for the lack of social media at that time)!

I had a little exhibition in Tighes Hill and then two beautiful friends Frank and Jess Bergmann hosted my exhibition in Redhead. When that gallery closed down I approached Mark at Cooks Hill Galleries and he started me off with a group exhibition. I have been with Mark ever since.

Last year I was a finalist in the Wynne Prize which was a dream come true for me to have my work hanging in the Art Gallery Of NSW. I’ve been calling myself an artist, with confidence, for about 3 years now, but I have been painting and creating all my life. I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am now, I am ambitious, tenacious and driven when I really want something. I don’t have family connections or background that supported my career. My biggest influence was probably my father who left when I was nine. This relationship taught me independence and to rely on myself—great traits for an artist.

I have two gorgeous, wonderful children that are amazing! Olivia who is 12 and Louis who is 10. My goal is to be a ‘conscious parent’ who does not control who they really are but supports them both to be all they can be without judgement. (I am really working hard on this goal, sometimes it’s a challenge, maybe I’ll get it together by the time they leave home). My husband would have to be my biggest supporter—he is incredibly supportive of my art career even though it is a very expensive pursuit with no guarantees and he has loved me through all the cycles of our life for 27 years and still going strong. When I'm not working I like to paint, do yoga, go for beach walks, swim, be with family and friends and eat out at passionate restaurants and cafes.” - Tracey @ Tracey-Maree Smith, artist.

“When I graduated from school I was a travel agent, I travelled many countries and continents including Europe, USA, New Zealand and Asia. I have learned much from travelling the world and have enjoyed experiencing cultures from different aspect of life. I absolutely loved it! I am involved with an organisation called 100% Hope Uganda helping orphaned and underprivileged children living in poverty. I had the opportunity to visit Uganda for 6 weeks in 2015 to volunteer.

A couple of years later, I entered the finance industry working for Newcastle Permanent in various roles from Trainee Teller – Branch Manager – Community Lending Manager. I gained a lot of knowledge in finance working with them and is how my journey started as a Mortgage Broker. With much interest in this industry I started out with Rod Jones Mortgage Broker and have not looked back.

When I’m not at work with clients, I am usually found looking for places to travel or staying fit which keeps me in a positive mind frame.” - Rod @ Rod Jones Mortgage Broker

“When I was younger and people would talk about the future, I always had this gut feeling that I would be a business owner. I didn’t know what type of business I would have, it just felt right when I would have those thoughts in my head and I knew that I was going to end up there... somehow… doing something…

I have always been an ambitious person but I think my first turning point in life was when I decided to leave school before completing my HSC. This was my first real decision in my eyes as a ‘grown up’, and I knew that it was up to me to ‘make it, or break it’ and I simply refused to become a statistic so I had no other choice than to make it. With an almighty strong work ethic inherited from my parents this saw me push the envelopes and constantly challenge myself to achieve my goals after leaving school.

Growing up I was a Daddy’s girl, in terms of personality and character I was a spitting image of him so at 18 years old when he suddenly passed away, my world was turned upside down and shook around a few times like a snow globe. Again, I was faced with a ‘make it, or break it’ situation and I am not one to back down from a challenge. I’m a big believer in everything happens for a reason and always look to find the positive in every situation. From this, I now embrace and appreciate that time is a non-renewable resource and it should not be spent doing ANYTHING that you don’t absolutely love doing as today may be your last.

This philosophy and the memory of my Dad fuel my fire with Booksmart, as I see so many business owners trying to do their own books and hating it. They could be spending time with their families doing something they enjoy or using their time on income generating activities which is the whole reason why they went into business in the first place. It’s just crazy!

Throughout my short time in business, I have learnt the importance of making time for yourself as a person away from the business. You are no good to anyone if you are running around like a headless chook. This lesson took about 12 months to dig myself into a nice deep hole and find the strength and persistence to pull myself out of it. I now exercise 7 times a week most at 5.15am and I love starting my day with a physical and mental workout before I get into the office. Being physically fit and committing to my gym schedule has really kept me on track so that I can be the best business owner and leader for my team.” - Alex @ Booksmart Accounting Solutions.

I’m Norwegian. But I’ve lived in Australia from when I was 20 so I really feel I’m a good blend of Viking and Aussie. What this means I’m down to earth, practical and have been working on tapping into my inner Viking courage of late. I became a citizen a few years back so I could vote and access fee help for my MBA. I’ve lived in Oslo, Sydney and Newcastle – and must say I love Newcastle the best.

After returning from living and working in Europe 5 years ago, I’ve wanted to start my own marketing company. I saw an opportunity to inject sophistication into a changing Newcastle market, but only grew the confidence to go ahead when my first large client, The University of Newcastle, approached me to help them a couple of years back. Even then, I kept Long & Co as a side hustle while working at nib Health Funds and studying an MBA.

Long & Co has been my key focus for nearly 1 year now, and I love it. The largest leap for new business is definitively daring to do it. Once you decide to take the leap from a regular pay check, the most nerve wrecking stuff is behind you. These days I get to work with and meet amazing people. I also get to pick up my kids from school from time to time, which is a massive change from the corporate life I used to live. My three little ones, Leo, Elki and Frankie, remind me to be grateful. We have a wonderful community around us of family, friends, school and sports helping my husband and I bring up these three amazing little people to make their own impact in this world.

A lot of my clients are SMEs, starting out on their own and with a very similar journey to me. I love what I do, am thankful I get to live in Newcastle and still have easy access to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. I’m truly excited about what’s ahead for Newcastle, I think this is our golden decade to grow and enjoy.” - Catherine @ Long & Co

"For as long as I can remember, I have been making ugg boots and helping in the family business. In fact, when I was a kid I had to stand on a milk crate to operate the clicking press. I didn’t ever want to take over the sheepskin factory, so when I was 18 I ventured into hospitality and then commission sales and was quite successful at both, moving up the ranks of both industries, becoming the highest paid commission sales person in NSW since 1992. This success wasn’t all that satisfying.

Then, after a few years away from the family business, I had found myself out of work and ventured back “home” to the business making uggies until something better came along. The rest… it’s history! And I’m still waiting for something better to come along.." Tony @ Mortels Sheepskin Factory

2 years ago I was brewing beer for a living. To most guys this seems like the perfect job and it was for a time. Brewing was an amazing job, I met and worked with some very interesting people and it wasn’t the typical 9-5 type job, which I loved. However I felt my life was missing something.. I didn't really have a purpose.

At age 27 I quit my job in Australia, packed a bag, and moved to Vancouver Canada with the hopes of finding some sort of inspiration or life change. Instead I found Movement and consequently so much more...

Since discovering movement my life has changed dramatically and positively. Most people would assume to attain the skill set I currently have I must have an extensive background in gymnastics, circus or another artistic discipline.
But this is not the case...

I discovered Origins Parkour (indoor parkour/movement gym) & Ido Portal (movement expert & teacher) the combination of these two and the people I have met on the way, along with a change in my perspective would ultimately reshape my future and lead me down the path I am currently on. Don't worry I still enjoy a craft beer or two ;)

Without any business knowledge what so ever I began to become obsessed with personal development and business, books, podcasts & workshops etc. This gave me the confidence and knowledge I needed to turn my passion into reality. I utilised social media to spread the word about my plans to open up a movement facility in Newcastle in early 2015 and already had people signing up to take the classes before I had landed back in Australia. I hit the ground running and haven’t doubted myself or looked back since.

These days my focus is on expressiveness, creativity, personal development and finding ways to playfully incorporate movement into my daily life and encouraging others to do the same.” - Rod @ The Movement Collective

“When I was 10 years old I was making videos in the backyard with my pets (to their dismay), and now it’s the way I make a living. I’m one of the lucky ones – who was able to turn a hobby into income.

I studied Media Production at Newcastle University and then worked for a video production company in Sydney before taking the leap and creating Fisheye Creative.

Which 23-year-old (in their right mind) - quits a reliable, enjoyable, full time job to go out on their own, to take on the stress of starting their own company with absolutely no way of knowing if they will succeed? Me.

I saw an opening for a product that didn’t yet exist in the Newcastle market, a city that was on the rise. It seemed that Newcastle business owners put video marketing in the “too hard” basket, so my goal was to make creating a video as easy as ordering a pizza.

In the first 3 months of opening the business, we created over 100 videos in 90 days. We’re looking forward to doubling that figure in the next 3 months. The best part of the job is being able to work with passionate business owners who believe in their product enough to market it" - Jacob @ Fisheye Creative
