As 2025 draws to a close, I wanted to take a moment to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy holiday season.

It's been a fantastic year watching this community grow, and I'm genuinely grateful to have you along for the ride. Whether you've been out swinging a coil in the Murchison, chasing patches around Leonora, or just dreaming about your next trip to the goldfields from home; you're what makes this community special.

Here's to 2026 being your best year yet on the detector. May your holes be full of targets, your signals be sweet, and may you finally dig that chunky nugget you've been dreaming about.

I've got plenty of exciting things planned for the new year, and I can't wait to share them with you.

Stay safe out there, enjoy the break with loved ones, and I'll see you in the new year.

There is literally nothing more humbling than being wrapped up like a human burrito in a swag, staring up at the galaxy without a roof to get in the way.

The menu tonight: charred marshmallows and ash-seasoned tea.

The entertainment: total silence (until the crows wake up at 4 AM).

Pro tip: Check your boots for creepies *before* you put them on. You're welcome. 🕷️🚫

The Australian bush teaches us one crucial lesson: patience pays off. Metal detecting for gold, either in Western Australia or Victoria is not just a hobby; it is a masterclass in resilience and vision.
You walk for miles, battling the heat, the flies, and the deafening silence, guided only by the faint hum of technology and your own intuition.
But when you finally unearth a nugget of pure, natural gold, the struggle vanishes instantly.

Keep scanning. Your breakthrough is out there waiting for you to find it.

Thinking about getting into gold prospecting? Don't fall for the online hype! Here are two massive myths, busted:

Myth 1: You MUST find gold every time you go out!

This expectation, often popularized by TV shows setting high targets (like 10oz or 100oz), is misleading and detracts from the hobby.
Fact: If you rely on gold finds for income, you are better off getting a different job, as you have more chance of winning a sizeable chunk of money in Lotto than making a significant amount through prospecting.

We come out to the bush of WA primarily to enjoy the quiet time, research local history left behind 100 to 130 years ago, and visit unique places that are completely off the beaten track.

Finding gold is fantastic, but the experience is the excuse for being out there. It's just like fishing: you enjoy every trip, even if you don't catch anything.

Myth 2: Any old metal detector is good enough!

While some people online suggest any detector will do, this is incorrect. Fact: To successfully find gold, you must have a proper metal detector that can punch through the mineralised soil. If you use inadequate equipment, you are just wasting your time and won't even find pieces of tin or nails.

It is critical to get the right tools for the job. Trying to use the wrong detector is like attempting to catch a Marlin with a fly rod, it simply won't work.

Did you know many rich gold finds from the 1890s to the early 1900s in Australia were simply abandoned by prospectors chasing the 'next big thing,' causing the locations to be lost to history?. You can uncover them using two powerful, free online sites!

1. Trove (trove.nla.gov.au): This is a free online research portal managed by the National Library of Australia (NLA), which digitized countless old Australian newspapers. Since newspapers back then recorded every gold rumour and occurrence, you can search for a town name plus "alluvial" (e.g., "Norseman alluvial").

The Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology turns the scanned images into searchable text, allowing you to find forgotten place names of gullies or mines, like "Queen of the West mine" or "Morrell's Gully".

2. Mindat.org: Take the specific location name you found in Trove and plug it into Mindat, a worldwide mineralogical and geology database. Use the 'localities' search option. Mindat can provide the precise coordinates for the site in both lat/long decimal and degrees/minutes/seconds WGS84. You might also find details, like the depth of shafts (e.g., 55 feet).

This research method is effective for finding locations across Western Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales. Turn historical rumours into GPS gold!
