Perth and Peel have just released their first ever Urban Greening Strategy. 🌳

The headline target: 30% tree canopy cover by 2040, and one million new trees planted by 2035.

It's backed by a new Let's Grow grants program for schools and community groups, alongside existing investments like the $6.9M Treebates incentive and $7.2M Tree Recovery Program.

Ambitious canopy targets need evidence-based decision making.

More trees planted than removed. So why is the canopy shrinking? 🌳

That's the puzzle in Sydney's city centre. On paper more new trees went in than came out. But canopy cover still went backwards.

The catch: you can't replace a 10-metre tree with a sapling and call it even.

The trees being lost are the big, established ones casting real shade, and a newly planted tree takes many years to do the same job.

has committed to 40% tree canopy cover across Greater Sydney by 2036.

In the City of Sydney LGA, canopy coverage reached 20.9% in 2024, with more than 18,000 street trees planted over the last two decades.

A City of Sydney spokesperson said, "Increasing canopy cover and greening is about making Sydney more liveable and resilient to a changing climate."

Targets like these become more achievable when progress is measured consistently — year after year, suburb by suburb.
