Should you fix it, or just replace it? - When you should repair vs replace

Deciding whether to fix your tech and continue using it or bite the bullet and replace it comes down to 3 main factors (with a hidden factor too!):

1: Cost 💸
2: Performance/Quality/State 💥
3: Remaining Lifespan 📉

Let’s break them down 👇

1 - Cost 💸

This one’s fairly simple.

Will it cost you more to fix it than to replace it?

If the answer’s yes, then it’s time to replace. But if the answer’s no, then you move on to the next step.

2 - Performance/Quality/State 💥

This one isn’t as simple.

There’s three words here that all have different meanings, so why are they in the one factor?

Performance = What you get out of it. Does it still perform well? Has its performance dropped?

Quality = How high of a quality it was to begin with and is now. Is this a higher quality, more valuable item?

State = What state the item is in. Is it dirty? Does it have dust caked everywhere? Is it still in good nick?

These three things have a big crossover point - whether it will still do what it needs to do.
Think about it like this:

If you have a device that performed well and will continue to do so, wasn’t the highest quality but got the job done, and was still in good shape, then it’s likely worthwhile to fix it, especially if you liked it and had it configured the way you wanted.

But if you have a device that didn’t perform that well towards the end even though it used to be high quality and now has scuff marks everywhere, a port that doesn’t work anymore, and known issues, then it’s likely worthwhile to replace it.

3 - Remaining Lifespan 📉

This is a big, big one.

If you’ve had ol’ reliable for 10 years and it’s just carked it, it’s probably too old to even consider fixing up - this is due to use and exposure over time degrading the components and functionality and general longevity and updatability going down the toilet.

But if an item should have plenty of life left in it after repairds, then it might be worthwhile to repair instead.

🤲 Bringing It All Together 🤲

Let’s say you have a device that’s 3 years old and you expect to get 5 to 6 (or maybe even 6 to 7 👀) years out of it. That means it’s still got roughly half its life left. So that leans more towards repairing.

Let’s say that same device performed well until the issue started, is of good quality that gets the job done and will do so quality-wise for the rest of its lifespan, and is in good condition, then that also leans towards repairing.

You might think at this stage “Cool! 2 out of 3, that’s good enough” - don’t stop at this point, even if you started at the other end. That’s why there’s 3 factors, in this situation 2 out of 3 isn’t always good enough. So let’s look at cost.

Say everything else on the device was good, but the cost of the repair made less sense than to replace it. That throws a spanner in the works doesn’t it?

So how would you decide in a situation like that? 🤔

At that point it boils down to this: What are you more willing to do? Transfer all your items across and get a newie, or fork out some extra cash and stick with what you’ve already got?

And that’s it! That’s our recommended framework on how to decide whether to repair or whether to replace.

From old to new - Another success with Setup Mate 🎉

This month we’ve helped people with a range of requirements!

One of these was a client who needed all the files and images off their old discs moved onto more modern media so they could save on space and have easier access to their photos with their TV.

We brought across the images from 7 discs onto 1 USB we supplied, and they were finally able to view and hold onto all their memories on their TV again. 📀 → 💾

We also pointed them in the direction of another local business for other, more specialised media storage they needed brought over to USB when they mentioned they had them. Why did we do this? Simple: If we can’t do it within our home & personal tech specialisation, then we’ll find someone even more specialised in their particular part of the field (in this case old media to new media) who can better help you 🧑‍💻

Can’t install that new game? Console storage grief? Don’t delete everything, try this instead 👇

1. Go through clips and recordings stored locally to see if there’s anything you can delete
Let’s be honest, half of it you probably forgot about anyway 😂

2. Use an external hard drive to store those games you’re probably going to come back around to - or leave it plugged in and install your new game on there
Just remember that your console storage is going to much faster than an external hard drive and even an external SSD, which affects game load times, download speeds, and more 💽

3. Consider deleting only games that you haven’t touched in 6+ months rather than something you’re probably going to reinstall again in 3 weeks
Otherwise you risk juggling your storage like this all the time, taking away from your gaming experience 🤡

People really treat their tech like this and wonder why it breaks 😬

(This is sarcasm):

If you want to ensure you break your tech and burn through money, do this 👇

1.

Let it get clogged up with dust and overheat, that way the insides of your technology overheat, corrode, get damaged, and reduce the lifespan of the device 😈

Never clean filters and vents, because that will stop the overheating and make your tech work better for longer.

2.

Twist and bend your cables at crazy angles so the casing breaks and the connections stop working properly 💥

Definitely don’t give your cables the space they need to bend at safe angles because that would help them last longer and function effectively.

3.

Be really rough with your technology and make sure it gets and stays dirty, this helps physically damage and destroy various parts of it 👊

If you’re careful with your technology, don’t abuse it, and clean it, then your tech’s going to last way longer and you don’t want that!

(This isn’t sarcasm):

In all seriousness, people treat their technology like this and wonder why it breaks so often, leading to them forking out hundreds and thousands of dollars to replace things that would have lasted if they’d just taken care of it 🤦

Clear the dust from your devices regularly and allow breathing room to reduce dust buildup, keep cables safely angled (that breathing room helps with this too), and take care of your technology and it’ll work much better for much longer 💡

Technology’s expensive. Don’t waste money by not taking care of it!
