🐝 What Creating Has Taught Me
When people see a finished handmade product, they see the end result.
A personalised gift. A cake topper. A welcome sign. An engraved tumbler. A special keepsake made for someone they love.
What they don't always see are the sketches, the ideas, the pieces that didn't work, the materials scattered across the workspace, the late nights, the tiny adjustments and the occasional moment of staring at something thinking…
"Why is this not working?!" 😂
Running HoneyBee Crafts and Personalised Gifts has taught me so much more than simply how to make things.
It's taught me about creativity, patience, confidence and just how special something can become when it's made specifically for another person.
🌻 Mistakes Are Part of Creating
If there's one thing crafting will teach you very quickly, it's that things don't always go according to plan.
Vinyl doesn't stick.
Cardstock tears.
A laser decides today is the perfect day to test your patience.
Something gets glued slightly crooked.
A design that looked amazing on the computer suddenly doesn't look quite right once it's made.
I've learned that mistakes don't necessarily mean you've failed.
Sometimes they teach you a better way to do something.
Sometimes they lead to an entirely different idea.
And sometimes you just have to laugh, start again and add the ruined materials to the ever-growing "maybe I can use that for something" pile. 😂
💛 Handmade Really Does Mean Something Different
One of my favourite things about what I do is knowing that I'm often creating something connected to an important moment in someone's life.
A baby's arrival.
A birthday.
A wedding.
A new home.
Christmas morning.
A gift for Mum, Dad, Nan or Grandad.
A business celebrating an achievement.
Sometimes it's simply something personalised with someone's name — but even that can make an ordinary item feel completely different.
That's something mass-produced products can't always replicate.
Behind every handmade order is a real person creating something for another real person.
And I think that's pretty special.
🌸 Creativity Doesn't Have Rules
I've also learned that inspiration can come from absolutely anywhere.
A colour combination.
A flower.
A customer's idea.
Something I've seen while I'm out.
A random thought at a completely inconvenient time when I'm nowhere near my computer. 😂
One idea often turns into another, and suddenly I'm experimenting with wood, acrylic, resin, cardstock, engraving, paint or whatever else I've decided I absolutely need to try.
That's one of the things I love most about creating.
There is always something new to learn.
🐝 Don't Compare Your Business to Someone Else's
This is something I'm still learning.
Social media makes it incredibly easy to compare your business to others.
Someone has more followers.
Someone has more orders.
Someone's photos look perfect.
Someone has equipment you don't have.
Someone seems to have everything figured out.
But what we see online is usually only a tiny part of someone's journey.
HoneyBee doesn't need to look like somebody else's business.
I'm building something that reflects my creativity, my ideas and the things I love making.
And that's enough.
✨ Sometimes You Need to Take the Chance
Some of my favourite creations have started with:
"I wonder if I could make that…"
Then comes researching, designing, testing, changing things and usually making a bit of a mess along the way.
But eventually that little idea becomes something real.
Creating has taught me that you don't have to know exactly how something will turn out before you begin.
Sometimes you just have to try.
🌻 Every Order Matters
When you run a small handmade business, an order is never just another order.
Someone has chosen something I created.
Someone trusted me to make something for their home, celebration, business or someone they love.
That still means a lot to me.
Every order, comment, share, recommendation and person who follows HoneyBee helps this little business continue growing.
You might think you're simply buying a personalised gift.
Meanwhile I'm probably in my workspace ridiculously excited because somebody ordered something I loved designing. 😂💛
🐝 And I'm Still Learning...
There are so many things I still want to create.
New techniques I want to try.
New products I want to design.
Ideas sitting in my head waiting to become something real.
And I'm sure there will be plenty more mistakes, failed attempts and moments when something absolutely refuses to cooperate.
But that's part of it.
HoneyBee Crafts and Personalised Gifts isn't only about the things I make.
It's about learning.
Experimenting.
Creating things that mean something.
And slowly building a little business from something I genuinely love doing.
The biggest thing creating has taught me?
You don't have to have everything figured out before you start. Sometimes you just need an idea, a little courage and the willingness to keep creating. 🐝💛
