Evolution of Siemens SIMATIC PLCs (1996-2013)

From simple logic control to powerful industrial automation systems, Siemens PLCs have continuously evolved to meet the demands of modern industry.

1996 – LOGO!

Compact and user-friendly, ideal for small automation tasks and beginners.

1997 - S7-200

A reliable micro PLC widely used in small machines and basic industrial processes.

2001 - S7-300 / S7-400

A major leap forward:

S7-300 → Modular and flexible for medium applications

S7-400 → High-performance for large-scale industrial systems

2009 - S7-1200

Introduction of integrated PROFINET, better communication, and entry into the TIA Portal era.

2013 - S7-1500

Next-generation PLC:

-High speed and precision

-Advanced diagnostics

-Built-in safety and security

-Optimized for Industry 4.0

PLC Raw Count Calculation For Pressure Transmitter Ever wondered how a PLC actually reads pressure from a transmitter?

A pressure transmitter sends a 4-20 mA signal... but the PLC doesn't understand "pressure" directly.

It reads RAW COUNTS.

What really happens inside a PLC?

1. Pressure Transmitter: Converts pressure into a 4-20 mA signal

2. Analog Input (Al) Card: Converts 4-20 mA into digital value (Raw Count)

3. PLC CPU: Uses LRV, URV & scaling logic to calculate actual

pressure

4. HMI / SCADA: Displays the final process value

Example

Input = 6.82 mA

ADC Range = 0-1023 (10-bit)

Raw Count ≈ 180

This concept is used in almost every industrial system Understanding raw count scaling is a must-know skill for every instrumentation engineer & technician.

Analog Signals in PLC

In real-world automation, not everything is just ON/OFF...

Analog signals allow PLCs to handle continuous values like temperature, pressure, level, and flow - making control systems more precise and efficient.

Common signal ranges:

• 0-10V

• 4-20mA

Key concept:

PLC converts analog signals into digital values, processes them, and controls outputs accordingly.

Accurate scaling and signal handling = Better control & stable processes

? Question for Engineers:

Which signal type do you prefer in your projects - 0-10V or 4-20mA, and why?

PROFIBUS vs PROFINET

PROFIBUS gave us reliability.

PROFINET gave us the future.

But here's what most automation engineers get wrong:

They think one replaces the other.

The truth? Real plants run BOTH - and understanding the difference separates beginners from experts.

Let me break it down👇

🔹PROFIBUS (1993 - The Veteran)

→ Master-Slave architecture

→ Max speed: 12 Mbps

→ Up to 126 devices per segment

→ RS-485 / MBP physical layer

→ Rock-solid reliability in legacy plants

🔸PROFINET (2004 - The Game Changer)

→ Ethernet-based communication

→ Speed: 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps+

→ Virtually unlimited devices

→ Native IT integration (TCP/IP built-in)

→ Advanced diagnostics down to channel level

Think of it this way:

📚PROFIBUS = A disciplined classroom

→ One teacher (master) controls the conversation

→ Students (slaves) only speak when asked

🌐PROFINET = A smart collaborative network

→ Every device can communicate freely

→ Real-time, flexible, and scalable

But here's the part nobody talks about:

💮Most real plants today run HYBRID architectures

→ PROFINET backbone for new installations

→ PROFIBUS segments for legacy field instruments

→ Connected through PN/PB couplers

The migration isn't a switch flip - it's a phased journey:

Phase 1: Assess existing PROFIBUS infrastructure Phase 2: Install PROFINET backbone + couplers Phase 3: Gradually replace end-of-life devices Phase 4: Full Ethernet convergence

Why industries are moving toward PROFINET:

100x faster communication

Channel-level diagnostics (not just station-level)

Seamless IT/OT integration

Supports IRT for motion control (
