Chittagong, Bangladesh. October 27, 2013 [DrikNEWS] - A huge fire broke out at the furniture market gutted at least 20 shops and destroyed up to 45 nearby shanties at Ashkar Dighir Parh in Chittagong. Twelve fire engines from four stations doused fire after couple of hours of fighting. According to fire service, the cause of the fire that broke out at 6am in the morning, casualties and the extent of the loss are still not known.

A Risky Eid Journey

Journalist out in force demands trial of abusive policemen

Dhaka, Bangladesh. May 27, 2012 [DrikNEWS]- Journalists from all media protest in front of National Press Club demanding that Shahidul Islam, the Assistant Commissioner of Tejgaon Zone Police and other policemen who beat up three journalists be tried in a court of law. Sajid Hossain, Zahidul Karim and Khaled Sarker, three photojournalists of the daily Prothom Alo, were taking photos of the students of Agargaon when police intervened causing severe injuries. When the journalists tried to file a complaint against the police officers the duty office of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station refused to accept it.

May Day

April 29, 2012 [DrikNEWS] - Police barred the rally of opposition parliamentarian in the National Parliament premises when they tried to march towards the Manik Mia Avenue around 9:30 AM in the morning. In this time they chanted anti-government slogans. BNP led 18-party declared a fresh two day long dawn to dusk nationwide general strike to protest against disappearance of Sylhet leader M Ilias Ali. M Ilias Ali went missing at night of April 17 along with his car driver after he went out of his home. His car, abandoned and with doors open, was recovered from a street in Mohakhali.

Khaleda Zia calls for strike in grand rally
