Chinese AI Models
For years, the narrative was simple: Silicon Valley builds the frontier models, everyone else catches up. That story is getting harder to tell.
Chinese AI labs are shipping competitive work. Qwen's latest models are credible. DeepSeek made noise. The gap that felt inevitable five years ago is closing faster than most people expected.
What's interesting isn't whether Chinese models will eventually match or exceed Western ones — at this point, that's a when, not an if. What's interesting is how uncomfortable it makes people in the US and Europe.
We're used to technological dominance as a given. When it becomes a contested space, the instinct is usually to regulate, restrict, or dismiss the competition. Easier than accepting that the advantage was temporary.
The real question isn't which country builds the better models. It's whether the best ideas will come from everywhere, or whether we're heading toward fragmented ecosystems that develop in isolation.
That outcome shapes a lot more than just AI.
