📈🛳️ The cost of shipping has been a rollercoaster ride over the past few years. In 2021, global shipping costs reached record highs, causing congestion at America's West Coast ports. But now, shipping costs have come back down to Earth, with some routes approaching pre-pandemic levels.
🌎 The vast majority of trade is conducted over the world's oceans, so skyrocketing shipping costs can wreak havoc on the global economy. According to a recent study from the IMF, when freight rates double, inflation increases by 0.7 of a percentage point.
🌊 Falling shipping costs are great news for everyone except, well... shippers. While most of us can eventually look forward to improved supply chain efficiency and less inflationary pressure, shipping companies are seeing the end of a two-year boom period.
📉 For the time being, carriers are canceling voyages and sending obsolete ships to scrap to keep prices from bottoming out completely. But recent data from Freightos shows that the Freightos Baltic Index (FBX), a widely recognized benchmark for global freight rates, has fallen 80% since its peak in late 2021.
🌍 Of course, some nations feel the effects of higher shipping costs more acutely than others. Countries that import more of what they consume and that are more integrated into the global supply chain are more likely to see inflation rise as shipping costs elevate.

💡 The container industry is experiencing a unique trend this Chinese New Year. Despite the normal cargo rush during this time, Chinese export container rates have surprisingly dropped. According to BIMCO's Chief Shipping Analyst, Niels Rasmussen, box rates that usually see a spike before CNY have taken a nosedive.
The China Containerized Freight Index, which measures average Chinese export container rates, has decreased by 50% since February 2022 and a further 27% in the past seven weeks.
This year, the index is performing the worst in 13 years.
