What if a taco could make you feel at home again?
When Oswaldo missed the flavours of Mexico, he didn’t look for shortcuts, he started making them himself.

Everything at Carnitas Oz starts with the tortilla: hand-pressed, made fresh that morning, and cooked the way Oswaldo learned from watching his mother. Topped with slow-cooked pork and traditional flavours that don’t compete with what’s underneath, it’s a process built on care from the very beginning.
Halifax has plenty of tacos. It doesn’t have many that taste like this.
Because for Carnitas Oz, food is just the excuse. Connection is the point. 🌮✨

This Thanksgiving, we’re thinking about the people who helped Rooted Tale become more than an idea. ❤️

The business owners who made time for us after a long day. The people who trusted us with their stories. The market organizers who introduced us to their communities. And everyone who shared a post, made an introduction, or simply told us to keep going.

We’ve taken a few turns to get here. We’ve changed our approach, learned from what wasn’t working, and returned to the idea that started it all: helping people discover the stories behind local businesses.

We’re still building. There are many more stories to tell, and we’re only getting started.

But before we look ahead, we wanted to pause and thank the people who helped us reach this point.

If you’ve been part of the Rooted Tale journey in any way, this letter is for you.

Happy Thanksgiving, Halifax. 🌿

And if there’s a local business whose story you think deserves to be heard, tag them below. We’d love to discover them.

Alisha said customers are always asking her the how, what, when and why of her business journey.

That’s exactly the gap we’re trying to solve.

Small business owners have the stories.
Their customers want to hear them.
Finding the time and knowing how to tell them is the hardest part.

Today felt different.

For the first time, a business discovered Rooted Tale organically, created their story, and published it — all before we woke up in the morning. 😄

They even added their Rooted Tale page to their bio.

That’s a small moment for the internet.

It’s a pretty big moment for us.

Welcome to Rooted Tale community, Golden Yolk Farm Stand. 🌱

Two dog parents. Large breeds. One rule: if they wouldn’t give it to their own dogs, it doesn’t make it onto the shelf. 🐾

That’s Serenity and Brandon Dewitte of Pawsitive Paws. Serenity spent years working in a specialty pet store, so she knows what good ingredients look like on a label, and what the alternative looks like dressed up in nice packaging.

Everything they carry gets tested at home first. Their Walleye Clouds, freeze-dried walleye belly with an ingredient list short enough to read in one breath, were an instant favourite with their dogs. The dogs at the market have backed that up.

After 45 stories, we’ve learned something important.

Local business owners aren’t short on stories.

They’re full of them.

The late nights. The first customer. The recipe from home. The unexpected turning point. The person who believed in them. The reason they kept going.

But having a story and knowing how to tell a story are two different things.

Storytelling takes craft. It takes knowing what to leave out, what to bring forward, where the emotion lives, and how to make someone who wasn’t there feel something.

Not everyone is a writer. And they shouldn’t have to be.

That’s one of the ideas behind what we’ve been building at Rooted Tale.

A way for local businesses to bring their raw thoughts, experiences and memories—and turn them into stories people actually want to read.

We’re testing our self-serve storytelling system privately right now, with our sights set on bringing it to businesses across Nova Scotia.

Because supporting local shouldn’t only be about buying local. It can also be about knowing the people you’re supporting.

What makes you care about a local business beyond what they sell?

We’ve been a little quiet here.

But we haven’t been sitting still.

Over the past few months, we’ve been building something new for local businesses—a self-serve way to turn the stories behind their businesses into something people can actually discover.

Rooted Tale started with Halifax. Now we’re working toward bringing this to local businesses across Nova Scotia.

We’re currently testing it privately, and we’re looking for a few businesses who’d like to try it, give us honest feedback, and help us make it better before we launch.

If you’re a Nova Scotia business owner and this sounds interesting, send us a DM.

We’re excited to start sharing stories again. 🌿

Ana Karina cannot see a flower without wanting to make it.

A bloom catches her eye, settles into her imagination, and stays there until she finds a way to recreate it in polymer clay.

Before Biodiversa Art, she was a science teacher in Colombia. Today, she balances a full-time job at a Halifax florist while spending her evenings shaping flowers, butterflies, and pieces of nature by hand.

Every bookmark, every earring, every detail begins with an idea and hours of patient work.

When people admire handmade creations, Ana hopes they remember something simple:

Behind every piece is a person who stayed up late, tried again, started over, and poured a part of themselves into what they made.

This is Ana Karina, founder of Biodiversa Art. 🌿❤️

It started with a simple question from a daughter:

“Why can’t we have co**has more often?”

For Flor Martinez, that question became the beginning of something much bigger.

What began in her kitchen as a way to recreate the flavours of home slowly became Pan Dulce — a family business built on tradition, patience, and an uncompromising commitment to authenticity.

Today, every co**ha, rosca de reyes, and pan de mu**to carries more than ingredients.

It carries memories.

At markets, Flor often watches someone take a bite and suddenly pause. They remember a bakery from their hometown. A family gathering. A childhood they thought was far away.

Those moments are why she does it.

Because Pan Dulce isn’t just about baking bread.

It’s about bringing a little piece of Mexico back to people who miss it most. ❤️
