Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to HVAC systems.

Oversized equipment can cause:

• Short cycling
• Poor humidity control
• Higher energy costs
• Reduced equipment lifespan
• Uneven comfort in the home

Proper heat loss and heat gain calculations ensure the system is sized correctly for the building.

Accurate sizing leads to better comfort, efficiency, and system performance.

Tools like TruCalc help HVAC professionals perform accurate load calculations using CSA F280 standards directly from the field.

3 HVAC Sizing Mistakes

1. Guessing system size instead of calculating
Many systems are sized based on rule of thumb (like square footage) instead of doing a proper heat loss and heat gain calculation. This often leads to oversized or undersized equipment.

2. Oversizing equipment “just to be safe”
Bigger is not better. Oversized systems can cause short cycling, poor humidity control, and reduced efficiency, which affects comfort and energy costs.

3. Skipping proper load calculations (CSA F280)
Without accurate load calculations, the system may not match the home’s actual heating and cooling demand. Following CSA F280 standards ensures the equipment is properly sized for the building.
