A client thought their laptop was hacked because the battery stopped charging. It turned out to be a failing battery, not hackers.

Unfortunately, fear and misinformation online make people assume every problem is a virus or cyberattack.

Hackers usually want one of three things:
• your money
• your identity
• access to larger systems

A dead battery usually just means… a dead battery.

Technology problems are stressful enough without panic added on top. Feel free to share this with someone who could benefit from it.

ALERT: Udemy was hacked!

If you have an account with Udemy, you must change your password immediately as they were compromised recently and your password was leaked online.

Anywhere you might have used the same password, you should change it there as well.

That said, you should never use the same password on multiple websites, because once one site is compromised and password exposed, hackers assume many people use the same password for everything, so they will try, and they will success. Unless you follow my advice.

Let this serve as a reminder to update your passwords everywhere. Share this with those you care about.

EMAIL SCAM ALERT!
If you receive the following email, it looks legit from Microsoft with a link spelt correctly to go to a Microsoft site, but it's a very creative scam that looks so legit. you have to look closely and know the status of your computer security to know they are not telling the truth.

SUBJECT: Action Required: Your Windows 10/11 Security Subscription Has Expired!
FROM: [email protected]
LINK TO: *randomletters...z1.web.core.windows.net
(I renamed the first part of the link to protect you from the real threat)

Whenever something looks suspicious, a quick Google search can reveal it's a scam. or call the person sending the link. Nothing can be trusted at a glance anymore.

⚠️ Please stop doing this with e-Transfers.

I saw this again today and it drives me crazy!

A business or charity sends an email asking for payment by e-transfer. In the same email they include:

• the email address to send the transfer to
• the secret question
• the secret answer

This completely defeats the purpose of the security question.

If their email account is ever compromised, the attacker now has everything they need to redirect incoming payments. When an e-transfer notification arrives, the hacker simply provides the answer and deposits the money into their own account.

That money is essentially cash.
Once it's gone, it's gone.

This is especially concerning with charity donations, because the donor has already given the money and the charity may never receive it.

The solution is incredibly simple.

💡 Enable auto-deposit.

It costs very little and removes the need for a security question entirely. The money goes directly to the intended account, safely, and immediately.

I see this mistake far too often, and it's completely avoidable.

If you're accepting e-transfers for payments or donations, please take a moment to review how you're doing it. A small change can prevent a very expensive mistake.

If you accept e-transfers for your organization, do you use auto-deposit yet?
