Does FreeRADIUS have a GUI?

The short answer is no, and InkBridge Networks has no plans to build one.

A handful of third-party web interfaces do exist, but they operate as front-ends for the SQL tables holding your users and accounting data.

None of the configures the server, which is the thing most people are picturing when they ask. Jana Sedivy on what these tools do and don’t do, and why there’s no GUI on the FreeRADIUS roadmap.

Most eduroam scaling advice starts with “add more servers.” The better question is where the complexity should live.

In this article, Alan DeKok makes the case for pushing it into a simple load balancer and out of the RADIUS servers themselves - so you can scale backends horizontally without touching your live IPs.

When you run eduroam for an entire country, the hardest problems have almost nothing to do with RADIUS.

They are architecture problems:
How you distribute load
How you handle failover
How you keep the system simple enough to support

Alan DeKok breaks down the design we recommend to national operators: one IP per site, a deliberately dumb load balancer, and a fleet of identical backend servers you can grow like a RAID array.

Go ahead. Name a RADIUS alternative that handles proxying, operates over UDP by design, encodes attributes compactly enough for a hundred million daily users, and runs on the access points already installed in your network.

We’ll wait.

New post from Alan DeKok on why the questions about RADIUS longevity keep coming up and why the answer keeps being the same.

I’ve spent more than 25 years building FreeRADIUS. When someone asks why authentication failed, the answer is usually in the data. The hard part is knowing where and why.

We’re building Inkquire to take the questions we’ve answered for years and put more of that context into tools FreeRADIUS administrators can use themselves.

The FreeRADIUS Debug Viewer is the first tool in the suite. It organises radiusd -X output so you can follow related requests, filter out irrelevant messages, and bring errors and warnings forward.

On October 29, I’ll introduce Inkquire, explain why we’re building it, and show the Debug Viewer in action.

The session is free, lasts 30 minutes, and includes time for questions. Register to join live or receive the recording.

A device wrongly kept off your network generates a support ticket within minutes. A device wrongly let on generates nothing at all.

That asymmetry is why network admission exception lists only ever grow, and why very few teams can tell you how many devices on their network authenticated with an actual credential.

Pop quiz: Roughly 30-40% of authentication attempts on parts of the eduroam network shouldn’t be happening. Why?

Because they’re from the accounts of former students, long since graduated, whose devices are still trying to connect.

That’s what happens when you deploy federated identity without a deprovisioning strategy.

Worth understanding before you build Wi-Fi offload into your network. Alan DeKok breaks it down here: https://www.inkbridgenetworks.com/blog/blog-10/wifi-offload-openroaming-authentication-197

FreeRADIUS debug output is useful because it shows the full story. It can be frustrating for the same reason.

The FreeRADIUS Debug Viewer organises radiusd -X output into a structured view. It helps you search and filter the output, follow related requests and sessions, and bring errors and warnings to the surface.

The Debug Viewer runs locally, so your debug information does not need to be uploaded to an AI service or cloud platform.

See Alan DeKok demonstrate it live on October 29 and learn what tools InkBridge is building next for people who run FreeRADIUS.
