Welcome to our Tech Tips & Tricks series, your weekly post of practical, easy-to-use IT knowledge. Every week i'll share a Tip or trick that is designed to be low risk but high reward. So without further Ado, here is our tip for today.
Rebooting.
I am sure if you have worked with ANY IT professional when your system isn't working the way it should be one of the first questions they will ask you is, "Have you restarted your system?" Now, Despite what you may think, no, we are not lazy admins or "passing the buck." In truth, computers NEED to be rebooted. Think about it like this. could your body perform at peak performance for a week straight without any sleep? Definitely not! A reboot, like sleep, provides the system, (and the body) with a much needed reset to operate a peak performance.
One critical thing to know, and i am not judging, but closing the laptop lid is NOT a reboot. hitting the power button on the monitor is NOT a reboot. hitting the power button (even if the screen goes out) is NOT a reboot. All your doing is putting the system in a sleep mode, "not the right kind of sleep i mentioned earlier either"
The only REAL way to reboot is to click the start button, hit the power button icon and select restart. (windows 11) "But what do I do if my system is locked up and i cant click on anything?!?!?! Good question. Simply hold the physical power button on your system down (typically for 30ish seconds) dont let go just because the screen went black. Keep holding that power button. The telltale signs are the fans go quiet, the backlights on the keyboard go out (if your system has this) give it 10 seconds or so and power it back up as usual. Believe it or not, this usually resolves 80% of performance issues.
OH one last thing. if you tell us you rebooted but didn't we will know within 4 clicks of the mouse. Best way to help your Admin, reboot first, and if the issue is still there, feel free to reach out. we're happy to help. Especially if you've already done the first thing we'll ask you to do! If you have a question or comment, feel free to drop me a line in the comments section! (as you can see, I am due for a reboot. 4 days 7 hours of uptime)
