It is the name of a company surrounded (name and symbol in some cases ) by a background shape. The background shape could be;

1) a pictorial shape like a shield
2) an abstract shape
3) a regular shape like a square, a triangle, etc.

It looks good on the packaging but is almost invisible in small sizes when the company name has more than four letters.
