Home Assistant Motivated My Daughter to Swim

She already knew how to swim — she was just too scared to get in the pool. So I built her a tiny Home Assistant dashboard: swim every day, and a hamster grows stage by stage, plus a real savings goal she’s earning toward.

Home Assistant isn’t just smart lights and thermostats. Sometimes it’s just a really good reason for a kid to jump in the water.

I kept blowing past my weekly Claude limit — always mid-task, always by surprise. So I gave myself a fuel gauge I can’t ignore. ⛽🤖

No dashboards, no tab-hopping. Here’s how it works:
① A small script on my machine reads my live Claude usage
② It pushes that into Home Assistant
③ Home Assistant fans it out — including to this LED matrix on my desk

What I see at a glance:
🟢 how much of the weekly limit is left
📈 a “pace” indicator — am I burning too fast to make it to reset?

Home Assistant as the hub, the matrix as the display. Now I actually stop before I hit the wall.

I built my own AI-powered inventory system for my maker space: QR codes on every bin, AI-classified parts, instant search for what’s inside.

Snap a photo of a new part → AI handles name, category, quantity and tags automatically. Need something? Check it out temporarily or remove it for good.
