This infographic shows the number of NGOs in Egypt that help homeless children, as well as the funds that go towards helping them.

Our multimedia project focuses on homeless people who are older than 18 years old. One of the major issues they encounter is the lack of a birth certificate. Since they have no birth certificate, they were unable to live in shelters when they were kids. Additionally, they are unable to apply for jobs.

Egypt’s homeless is a multimedia journalism project that aims to shed light on the homeless in Egypt, specifically those older than 18 year old, we interviewed some of them who live in Sayeda Zainab neighbourhood in Cairo. The project focuses on discussing these people’s hopes, their wishes and the struggles they face every day.

Slum formation has begun with the migration of individuals from rural areas to urban districts, seeking better standards of living. Now, Manshiyat Naser residents make a living through working in internal markets, and recycling and sorting garbage items.

These work practices are a reason these residents choose to stay in the area.
