We had a great day playing our annual Saga competition with 8 players enjoying 4 games throughout the day.

Thanks to Rich for organising and running the day also thanks to Andy for this report.

A range of armies dating from the Punic wars to the Crusades turned up for the annual Saga tournament at the AWC. Over a series of four games the armies and their generals showed their ability to perform at different sizes and to beat up a range of opponents.
Game One was cagey in many cases, with no less than half the armies not scoring at all and the second-placed player being the defeated opponent of the leader. The Welsh were in first position, with Crusaders in second and Anglo-Saxons and some elephants tying for the third spot.
Game Two was played down the length of the table and saw some of the early leaders struggling. A different Anglo-Saxon force came from nowhere to take the lead on 10 points, with the Crusaders hanging on to tie for second with the Hussites and the other Saxons retaining the next spot. Meanwhile the elephants had gone into reverse and were back on zero.
Game Three saw some big scores from some of the armies who had made a slow start to the tournament. Anglo-Saxons 1 jumped up to first place after scoring a massive 20 points (total score 26), with Burgundians snagging 17 for second (21) and Anglo-Saxons 2 in third (15). (Elephants: -8.)
It was all to play for in the last game, which saw the single biggest score of the tournament. When the dust settled, Anglo-Saxons 2 had reaped an enormous score of 29 points (more than most of the players scored all tournament, and not far off the second placed player’s total score) to win with a total of 44, the Burgundians had just sneaked second place with a score of 11 (32, winning the tie with the higher Game Four score), and Anglo-Saxons 1 had been pegged back in their final game, scoring only 6 points – still enough to finish with a total of 32.'

Competition winners are

1st: Steve Bolingbroke - Anglo Saxons
2nd: Philip Ayerst - Burgundians
3rd: Dave Moody - Anglo Saxons
