Even with last week’s significant changes in government, most notably the dissolution of DSIT, it’s important to acknowledge the progress OfDIA has driven, particularly through the DVS Trust Framework. Their latest blog captures this well, drawing on insights from their recent presentations at the European Identity Conference and Identity Week Europe.

As the UK moves closer to widespread digital identity adoption, it’s reassuring to see certified, operational services like Yoti and Luciditi used as evidence that momentum has continued despite the uncertainty and negative commentary of recent years.

One challenge now is that, without DSIT (and perhaps a differently focused OfDIA), a dedicated supplementary DVS code for in‑person Proof of Age may take time to materialise. In the meantime, DVS providers must set the bar themselves, consistently and in the public interest, to avoid fragmented acceptance experiences that would undermine usability.

England is moving ahead with a legal ban on selling high‑caffeine energy drinks to under‑16s from April 2027. The ban will apply to drinks containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre, targeting products like Red Bull, Monster and Prime.

Major supermarkets already operate voluntary bans, but this shift makes compliance mandatory and follows the generation to***co ban, which commences in January.

Digital proof‑of‑age solutions are a practical way for younger people to prove age and retailers to meet the new requirement without friction.

Last week the Minister of State for Policing and Crime, Sarah Jones, took steps to lay a statutory instrument to update the Licensing Act 2003 (Mandatory Licensing Conditions), which permits the use of certified and registered Digital Verification Services (DVS) for the sale and supply of alcohol in England and Wales.

This update to the MLC is set to take effect from Autumn 2026.

Regulations which will allow the use of digital proof of age when purchasing alcohol has today been announced will come into effect from Autumn 2026.

A statutory instrument to amend the Mandatory Licensing Conditions (MLCs) is set to be published this afternoon, which will outline that a certified Digital Verification Service (DVS) can be used to prove age in person.

Whilst it will still be possible to use physical forms of ID, most people will want to leave their Passports and Driving Licenses safe at home. Proving your age with your phone will likely become the preferred way to prove your age.
