Panasonic TOUGHBOOK Europe

Panasonic TOUGHBOOK Europe Toughbook doesn’t just lead the ruggedised PC and tablet market, it defined it. And that’s where the Toughbook story begins.

Since 1996, Panasonic TOUGHBOOK has led rugged laptops and tablets, delivering uncompromising quality and enabling efficient, secure work in the toughest environments across different indsutries. Since the first model was launched, Toughbook mobile PCs and tablets have created their own niche in the world of mobile technology, redefining the possibilities of access to data and applications in the

most challenging of environments. All Toughbook rugged mobile notebooks and range of Toughpad tablets, allows access to applications and data whatever the setting, resulting in solutions that transform people’s working lives and their operational efficiency. Only specially chosen components that are selected, tested and designed by Panasonic go into the manufacture of a Toughbook or Toughpad. That means every device is designed and built to overcome almost any barrier that could prevent a worker using a mobile computer: impacts, moisture, temperature, weak or unreliable wireless reception, battery life, ergonomics or even screen visibility in bright sunlight. Computer Product Solutions enables mobile workers to improve their productivity with its range of Toughbook rugged notebooks, Toughpad business tablets and electronic point of sales (EPOS) systems. The Toughbook range of mobile PCs and tablets is divided into distinct categories of ‘ruggedisation’, each created with specific industry applications in mind. Panasonic equips Toughbook mobile PCs and tablets with technology that’s uniquely designed to overcome the access barriers encountered by countless professionals, in many industries, every day. So now, when people are describing or discussing rugged or durable laptops, you’ll find they almost always use the word ‘Toughbook’. Buying rugged devices used to be a conversation between IT and finance.

But now sustainability leads are in the room. So are compliance officers. Sometimes procurement, sometimes ESG reporting.

Each one carries different questions.

Environmental impact. Total cost across the lifecycle. Audit readiness. Refresh cadence.

The IT manager sitting at the head of the table has to answer all of them.

Which is a lot to ask of one device decision.

TOUGHBOOK is designed to answer more of those questions at once.

→ For finance, long service lifecycles help reduce total cost across the lifecycle.

→ For sustainability, remanufacturing and extending device life can help conserve resources and reduce environmental impact.

→ For compliance, long-term service and support provide greater operational confidence.

→ For procurement, modular components mean the whole device does not have to be replaced when requirements change.

That is what a modern rugged procurement decision needs to do.

One device helps address the priorities of finance, sustainability, compliance, and procurement without four separate conversations.

Most IT managers in utilities aren't looking for faster devices.

They're looking for fewer surprises.

New regulations. New cyber requirements. More reporting. Ongoing workforce change.

Every year something moves.

That's why many organisations choose a device fleet designed for stability.

TOUGHBOOK devices are built for long service lifecycles, modular repairs, extended warranty options and long-term support.

When everything else is changing, it's valuable when your mobile estate isn't.

For busy IT leaders, that's not a small thing.

What happens when technology fails for the people who keep society running?

Thirty years ago, Panasonic set out to solve that challenge. While standard devices struggled in the field, TOUGHBOOK was engineered from the ground up for frontline workers operating in demanding environments where reliability is mission-critical.

This year, we're proud to celebrate 30 years of Panasonic TOUGHBOOK innovation.

From the launch of our first rugged notebook in 1996 to today's AI-enabled edge computing solutions, our mission has remained the same: empowering mobile teams to stay connected, productive, and operational when failure is not an option.

We're incredibly grateful to our customers, partners, and colleagues who have been part of this journey, and excited for what's next.

Here's 30 years of trusted technology, frontline innovation, and the people who keep the world moving

Opening a rugged laptop with gloves on has always taken two hands.

The latch. The lift.
The pair of gloves that has to come off.

For one shift, that only takes a moment. Across a fleet, every day, those moments add up.

That's why Panasonic rethought the 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺 on the new TOUGHBOOK 56.

The latch is gone.

The screen opens one-handed, even with gloves on.

It's a small design change with a big impact on everyday workflows.
Some

Two things are true inside most European substations right now.

→ The monitoring kit was installed decades ago and still runs on serial connections.
→ The devices sent to inspect it have moved on to USB-C and Wi-Fi.

Which means the inspector arrives at the substation and the laptop cannot plug in.

The readings cannot be extracted. The inspection takes longer. The report cannot be completed while the shift is still running.

This highlights a challenge many utility organisations face. Digital transformation is moving quickly, but critical infrastructure operates on much longer lifecycles.

Future-ready technology must also be backward-compatible.

Field teams need devices that connect with both legacy and modern systems while performing reliably in harsh conditions. TOUGHBOOK supports serial-port connectivity alongside the ruggedness, mobility and connectivity required by today's utility workforce.

The organisations that get the most from digital transformation are not always those adopting the newest technology fastest. They are the ones that successfully bridge modern workflows with decades of existing infrastructure.

The biggest mistake buyers make when comparing rugged devices is
assuming an independent third-party lab report tells the whole story.

Two devices can both have an independent third-party lab report for MIL-STD-810H and still have gone through completely different levels of testing.

One may have completed only a handful of tests.
Another may have completed dozens under far harsher conditions.
Yet both reference the same standard.

The same is true for IP ratings.
That's why the real question isn't:

"𝘏𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘥-𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘺 𝘭𝘢𝘣?"

It's:

"𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺?"

An independent third-party lab report is important. But the report itself is not the story.

The story is which tests were performed, how demanding they were, and whether those conditions reflect the reality of your working environment.

That's the difference between a device that's rugged on paper and one that's proven in practice.

A smart metering technician often cannot move on to the next appointment until the previous job is documented and closed.

From a basement to an outdoor meter to the van cab, sometimes in a single visit.

The screen has to stay readable in the sun. The touchscreen has to work in rain and with gloves. The keyboard has to detach for reporting on the spot.

4G LTE and 5G SA connectivity keep customer databases and work order systems within reach.

When every visit counts, the technology behind the technician has to keep up.

Emergency services, field technicians, and roadside recovery teams face growing challenges when integrating mobile devices into vehicles.

While traditional docking solutions remain valuable, vehicle cabins are becoming increasingly crowded.

Panasonic's TOUGHBOOK Screen Mirroring solution, developed in partnership with VNC Automotive, mirrors a TOUGHBOOK display directly onto the vehicle's OEM dashboard screen.

Reduce hardware complexity and streamline access to work orders, navigation and communications without the need for additional in-cabin devices or bulky docking stations.

Powered by the Cobalt Cube® from VNC Automotive, the solution is compatible with vehicles that support Android Auto.

With the appropriate software pack, it can also integrate with vehicle systems such as lights, sirens, and radios, providing a unified console-style interface.

Available with full installation and up to five years of support as a Panasonic Connect Mobility Service.

How do you maintain situational awareness when communication infrastructure isn't available?

In critical situations reliable communication is essential for mission success, but what to do if there is no – or no secure infrastructure?

This is where mobile, private 5G Networks come in.

Easy deployable, secure, and independent of public infrastructure, they create resilient communication for command centers, major events, critical infrastructure, and mission-critical operations.

Read Thorsten Lutz's latest blog on how private 5G networks and rugged TOUGHBOOK devices are helping build resilient command-and-control operations exactly where they are needed.
