“The computamabob isn’t doing the thingy…”

OK, as a phrase it’s pretty unique, but as a sentiment, I hear more often than you might think.

Sometimes followed by a bit of hesitation, maybe a pause, an apology, perhaps even a nervous giggle.
Not because the problem isn’t real — but because it’s hard to put into words.

The call above really happened, it stayed with me. Just recently I started wondering why this call stood out. I found reasons and learnings, some I didn’t expect.

I’ve shared the story, and what it revealed, here:

🚨 JUST NOW: France DUMPS Microsoft — 2.5 MILLION GOV DEVICES SWITCH to LINUX in SHOCK DIGITAL BREAK ⚠️💻🇫🇷

In a bold move shaking the tech world, France is reportedly phasing out Microsoft operating systems across government infrastructure — replacing them with open-source alternatives at an unprecedented scale.

The transition could impact up to 2.5 million devices, marking one of the largest public-sector migrations away from Microsoft in decades. Officials point to cost savings, sovereignty, and long-term control as key drivers behind the shift.

Behind the scenes, Linux-based systems are being positioned as the backbone of a new digital strategy — one designed to reduce dependency on foreign tech providers and strengthen national cybersecurity resilience.

Analysts say this isn’t just an IT upgrade — it’s a strategic reset that could inspire similar moves across Europe.

👉 The 30-year dominance coming to an end — and the tech giant suddenly on the outside — is unfolding fast.

“The computamabob isn’t doing the thingy…”

There was a trace of a giggle in the words, someone was quite aware of how they sounded, but more importantly, knew it didn’t matter.

It revealed something important, not about the computer, not about the problem, about the person calling.

I’ve written about this call recently, trying to look at why it’s stayed with me, why I think of it warmly, and why this odd little call still feels one of the best.

If you’ve ever faced an issue and thought “I don’t even know how to describe this …” — you might recognise some of it.
