A new employee’s first day should be about meeting the team, learning the role and getting started — not waiting around for a laptop to be configured.

One of our clients recently had a new team member joining and needed a new laptop prepared. They purchased the device, and we took care of the rest.

We built the laptop using our trusted hardened security configuration, installed the required business software, applied the latest updates and checked that everything was working correctly.

We also provided a detailed multi-page handover document showing exactly what had been completed. This gives the client a clear record of the device setup, security measures and important information they may need in the future.

The best part? The laptop was fully prepared five days before the employee’s start date.

Keeping your Windows machines secure does not have to be complicated.

Here are 10 simple best practices every business should consider:

1. Keep Windows updated
2.Use built-in security protection
3. Use strong, unique passwords
4. Protect devices with BitLocker encryption
5.Remove old or unneeded services
6. Back up important data
7. Remove unused apps and keep machines tidy
8. Run regular vulnerability scans
9. Avoid using admin rights for daily work

This Dell Micro PC came in for a quick refresh. I added an extra 8GB RAM, taking it from 8GB to 16GB, and replaced the Wi-Fi aerial as the original one had been lost.

It is a good reminder that not every IT issue needs a full replacement. Sometimes a simple upgrade or repair can extend the life of your equipment and keep your business running smoothly.

Client job completed.

A client was retiring an old computer system and wanted one thing made clear:

Could any data still be recovered from the SSD drives?

That is a very sensible question.

When a business gets rid of old computers, laptops, servers or storage drives, the risk does not end when the system is switched off.

Those drives may still hold client records, financial information, emails, login details, business documents and other sensitive data.

Deleting files or doing a quick format is not always enough.

The client asked us to make sure the data could not be retrieved from the used SSD drives before the equipment was fully retired.

That gave them peace of mind.

It reduced the risk of sensitive information falling into the wrong hands.

It also helped protect their clients, their reputation and their business.

This is the kind of job that often gets overlooked.

But it matters.

Old equipment can still carry business risk.

Before you sell, recycle, donate or dispose of old computer systems, it is worth making sure the data has been dealt with properly.
