If your business has 20 employees or fewer, I’m offering free online cyber security awareness training.

Why? Because most cyber problems do not start with complicated hacking. They start with an email, a link, a fake message, or a simple mistake made on a busy day.

This training helps your team:
• spot suspicious emails and links
• avoid common scams
• understand what to look out for
• feel more confident about staying safe at work

At the end of the session, employees will complete a simple multiple-choice test. Anyone who passes will receive a downloadable certificate of completion.

Today’s job: building a secure Dell Pro Micro machine for a client, following Systems Secure best practice.

The machine was hardened, configured properly, and finished with a vulnerability scan showing no issues.

That means the client gets a device that is cleaner, safer, and ready for work from day one.

And because security should be practical too, there was one extra touch.

🧦 Lost Sock Day is basically a cyber security lesson in disguise.

You start the day with two socks.
By lunch, one has vanished without a trace.
No alerts. No warning. No obvious signs of compromise.

Sound familiar?

That is how a lot of cyber incidents start too.

Everything looks fine…
until something important goes missing.

Today’s reminder:
Keep track of your assets.
Watch for suspicious activity.
And never assume that because you cannot see a problem, there is not one.

Socks. Passwords. Data.
If they go missing, somebody usually should have noticed sooner.

Thursday’s job: external vulnerability scanning for a client’s firewall.

The client is getting ready for their official PCI DSS scan, so we carried out our own scan first against the external side of their firewall.

The idea is simple: check what the outside world can see before the official scan takes place.

If anything had been picked up, we would have had the opportunity to investigate and fix it before the formal PCI DSS scan was run.

This is a good example of proactive cybersecurity. It is much better to find and fix issues early than to wait for a failed compliance scan.

Monday’s job: building a secured laptop for a client.

The system was fully configured, hardened, and security checked before being handed over, making sure it was ready for day-to-day business use from the start.

The client also asked for a laptop stand. Rather than buying one off the shelf, we designed and 3D printed one using TPU and PETG.

A secured laptop, a custom stand, and a happy client.

This week I helped a home user (not my usual business client) who’d had their Hotmail/Outlook account taken over. They were understandably very upset — these incidents cause a huge amount of stress.

Email is a hub account. Once an attacker gets in and changes recovery details, it can quickly spread to other services — especially if the same login details are reused. Because this was a Microsoft account, there was also concern around OneDrive access and even knock-on effects like Xbox/subscription disruption, which was hard on the children.

It started before Christmas, which made it even more stressful. The attacker also took over their online shopping account and placed orders that were delivered to their home — so it wasn’t just digital, it became a real-world problem immediately.

You might think your personal accounts aren’t worth protecting, or that nobody would bother targeting you. The truth is, attackers often try thousands of accounts automatically, looking for any that work — and people only realise how much email unlocks when it’s too late.

Sadly, this person will likely spend the next few weeks trying to untangle the mess and regain access to everything.

Details kept vague for privacy.

This could have been prevented simply by enabling MFA on the account and using a password manager to ensure each online service had a unique password. These simple steps would have saved a lot of stress, time, and even money.
