The 2027 RSPB Family Organiser is out in the world and there’s a limited number now available in my shop (link in bio). Bird loveliness to take you through the months and seasons. Don’t forget each purchase funds the RSBP’s vital conservation work - which will include recovery work for those sites devastated by wild fire this summer. A useful planner that also does good.

Goldfinch and spear thistles. I watched these finches feast on the seeds which once airborne, drifted up and away on the breeze, using their parachutes of long, white hair. I still try to catch the odd seed in my orbit - to make a wish before it lands, then gently send it on its way.

Nightjar sketches - ink and stick. (Preparatory work for a publishing project with the RSPB.) This time last year, I was walking on Dunwich Heath in Suffolk - a rare coastal lowland heath habitat, home to the nightjar and many other species. Just a few weeks ago, it was utterly devastated by wildfire and what was once a metaphor of Ted Hughes has become horribly prophetic…

These hand decorated little wooden bird decorations will available in sets of three, similar to the Golden Plover from last year. Hummingbird hawk moths on our buddliea bush today. So often it’s all about counting the terrible losses in our nature deleted country. Something I’m all too aware of as a conservation illustrator. However, flicking through my trusty Field Guide to the Butterflies and Other Insects, published over 40 years ago, ‘About 50 hummingbird hawk moths are reported in Britain each year…’ Now, I’m either incredibly lucky, or numbers of these brilliant creatures have significantly increased over those decades. Have you spotted one this summer? And did you know they fly to us from the south of France? If you can sneak up close enough you might be able to hear their high-pitched hum. Now that’s field craft I’d love to learn!

Lean in close for the delicate beauty of wild weeds and their ripening seeds… From wayside dandelions to chicory and sheep’s sorrel - a feast for the Micromys minutus - the harvest mouse. Spent an hour in the field margins this morning with hundreds of tiny grasshoppers pinging in all directions.
