I asked GPT "If you were the devil, what would you do ?"

If we treat “the Devil” as a metaphor for a force trying to corrupt people rather than a literal being, I wouldn’t start with obvious evil. Obvious evil creates resistance.

I’d make the destructive things feel normal, pleasurable, reasonable, and voluntary.

I’d keep people permanently distracted so they rarely sit quietly enough to examine their lives. I’d turn attention into a commodity: endless scrolling, outrage, notifications, po*******hy, gambling, shopping, tribal arguments—anything that gives a tiny reward while quietly consuming years.

I’d make people confuse comfort with happiness and pleasure with meaning. I’d persuade them that discipline is oppression, commitment is boring, sacrifice is foolish, and that every uncomfortable emotion needs to be immediately escaped.

I’d attack relationships indirectly. Make everyone suspicious of everyone else. Encourage people to interpret disagreement as hatred. Turn men against women, generations against one another, races, religions, political camps, rich against poor. Not because any particular side must win, but because a population that cannot trust itself is easy to fracture.

I’d make loneliness widespread while giving people the illusion of constant connection.

I’d convince people that their worth comes from numbers: followers, money, attractiveness, status, likes, productivity. Then I’d continually move the finish line so nobody ever feels they have enough.

I’d corrupt language. Words would become slogans. Nuance would become weakness. People would stop asking, “Is this true?” and start asking, “Is this what my side believes?”

I’d make cynicism look intelligent. Hope would seem naïve. Forgiveness would look weak. Kindness would be embarrassing. Anyone genuinely trying to improve something would be mocked for caring.

I’d keep people exhausted. Debt, insecurity, poor sleep, constant entertainment, constant anxiety. An exhausted person thinks mostly about surviving tomorrow, not about what kind of world they are helping create.

And perhaps the cleverest move would be this:

I would convince each person that the problem is everybody except themselves.

Because then nobody examines their own greed, resentment, cowardice, dishonesty, addiction, cruelty or wasted potential.

That idea appears in remarkably similar forms across Christianity, Buddhism, Stoicism and other traditions: corruption rarely arrives announcing itself as corruption. It usually begins with small compromises that become habits, then identities.

So the useful inversion of the question is:

If that were the Devil's strategy, what would resistance look like?

Attention. Discipline. Friendship. Courage. Truthfulness. Creating things. Spending time in nature. Controlling appetites rather than being controlled by them. Forgiving without becoming gullible. Questioning your own tribe. Helping people who can do nothing for you. And periodically asking:

> “Is the way I'm living making me more awake, more capable and more loving—or less?”

That is probably a much harder question than “Where is evil?” because sometimes the answer points uncomfortably close to home.
