Generally, no, provided it's disclosed.

What damages trust isn't AI use itself, it's discovering AI use that wasn't disclosed.

Businesses being upfront about where and how they use AI tend to read as more trustworthy, not less, especially against the backdrop of scam sites and fake reviews people have already been burned by.

The two businesses posting near-identical AI voiceover reels, one disclosed, one not, back this up directly.

The undisclosed one faced two days of comment-section backlash. The disclosed one faced nothing at all.

What counts as AI generated content on social media?

Broader than most people assume.

It's not limited to a fully AI-written caption or a text-to-video clip.

Platforms count anything where AI meaningfully created or altered the content, images generated from a prompt, video with AI-added backgrounds or animation, voiceovers built with AI voice tools, and text where AI produced the substantial first draft, not just a light edit.

What generally doesn't count, at least under most platform rules, is AI used for minor technical assistance, spelling correction, small colour adjustments, auto-captions transcribing your own spoken words.

The line sits at whether AI generated or substantially altered the core content, versus just supporting a human-made piece.

A business posting a product photo shot on a real camera but run through an AI background removal and replacement tool sits in the "AI generated" bracket under most platform definitions, even though the product itself is real and unedited otherwise.

The moment a generative AI tool touches a meaningful part of the final output, most platforms treat it as AI content requiring disclosure, regardless of how small that part felt in the process.

Do I own the content an AI website builder creates?

Usually yes for use, but ownership specifics vary by platform, and UK law on AI-generated content ownership itself remains genuinely unsettled right now.

Where a human meaningfully shapes and edits the output, standard copyright protections tend to apply.

Where AI output has had little human input, the legal picture is murkier.

Practically, most builders grant you usage rights to the site and content generated within your account.

Full IP ownership, transferability, and what happens to that content if you leave the platform varies a lot, and is worth checking rather than assuming.

A business owner who built her entire brand identity, logo included, inside an AI design tool discovered when trying to trademark it that the platform's terms only granted her a usage licence, not full ownership.

Worth checking this before it becomes a trademark registration problem, not after.

Is it safe to use a no-code AI website builder for my business?

Generally yes, for the build itself.

The real risk sits in transparency after launch, not in the tool choice.

A no-code AI builder isn't inherently a liability.

Zero disclosure about how visitor data gets handled, whether a human reviews enquiries, and what happens if something goes wrong, is what turns it into one.

Worth checking before committing to any builder: where visitor data gets stored, who owns the IP of generated content, and what happens to your site and its data if you ever want to leave the platform.

A founder building a full booking site through a no-code AI tool in an afternoon had a fast, functional site live by evening.

What she hadn't checked was where customer enquiry data was actually stored, or whether it lived only inside a platform she didn't fully control.

Worth five minutes reading the builder's terms before launch, not after a client asks.

You can, but it's usually not the safest setup.

Using your own AI account for client content means every prompt, output, and piece of client information sits in your account, under your data and IP terms, not theirs.

A cleaner approach: ask the client to set up a business AI account you log into on their behalf, ideally through a business email and Google account they control.

Every prompt and output then sits under their ownership, and access can be revoked cleanly if the relationship ends.

A VA managing five client accounts using her own personal ChatGPT login for all of them was mixing five businesses' worth of prompts, client details, and generated content inside one account she owned.

Switching each client to their own business login took an afternoon, and closed a real gap in how data and IP were being handled across the board.

Do virtual assistants need to disclose AI use to clients?

Yes, on two fronts.

VAs need to be upfront with clients about which parts of their work involve AI, since that shapes what the client's own disclosure obligations look like downstream.

And depending on the content and audience, the client may need to disclose to their own customers too.

This is easy to skip because VA work often happens quietly, in the background, with the client never seeing the process, just the finished caption or graphic.

That's exactly why it needs saying out loud rather than assumed.

A VA generating client captions with ChatGPT and never mentioning it isn't doing anything malicious, most of the time it's just standard workflow.

But if that client later finds out from someone else, or gets a comment calling out AI-sounding copy, the conversation becomes about trust, not about the tool.

Do I have to label AI content on Instagram?

You've got two options, not really a choice about whether it happens.

Either you flag it yourself using the toggle at upload, or Instagram flags it for you once it detects AI signals in the file.

What you don't get is the option to publish AI content with no label anywhere.

Legally, whether you're obligated depends on where your audience sits.

If followers in the EU see the content, Article 50 applies regardless of Instagram's own rules.

Practically, Instagram's detection makes the point close to moot.

Skip the toggle, and the platform's scan usually catches it anyway through C2PA and metadata.

A small skincare brand running product demo reels edited with an AI background tool assumed skipping the toggle meant no label showed up.

It showed up two days later, added automatically, with zero input from them on the wording.

Better to choose the label yourself than have Instagram choose it for you. You don't want flagged for some missed action.

Is AI generated content illegal in the UK?

No, not on its own.

The UK doesn't have its own version of the EU AI Act, and there's no blanket law making AI-generated content illegal.

What exists instead is a patchwork of existing law that already applies.

Consumer protection law, advertising standards through the ASA, defamation law, copyright law, the Online Safety Act.

AI-generated content that misleads, defames, infringes copyright, or harms someone falls foul of these the same way human-made content would.

Where it gets more complicated is UK businesses with any EU-facing reach.

The EU AI Act still applies to them for that portion of their audience, regardless of UK law saying nothing specific about AI content itself.

So a UK business can be fully within UK law and still carry EU AI Act obligations at the same time, for the same piece of content.

A UK-based ecommerce brand running an AI-generated product video isn't breaking UK law by doing that.

But if that video reaches customers browsing from Germany or France, Article 50 disclosure requirements kick in for that audience, UK law or not.

Two different rulebooks, same piece of content, depending on who's watching it.

Do sole traders need an AI policy?

Yes, and this is the bit that surprises people, because "sole trader" sounds like it should mean simpler rules.

It doesn't.

The Act looks at what you're doing with AI, not how your business is structured.

A sole trader using AI tools for client work carries the same deployer obligations as a limited company doing the same thing.

The scale of the policy can absolutely match the scale of the business.

A sole trader doesn't need the same documentation a fifty-person agency needs.

But "we don't have a policy because we're small" isn't a position that holds up, especially once a client starts asking questions, which is happening more often now, not less.

A sole trader running a done-for-you social media service for six small business clients, all content AI-assisted, needs a one-page policy covering how she flags AI use to each client and how that gets reflected in what goes out under their name.

Fifteen minutes to write. Worth having before a client asks and she's improvising an answer on a call.

What is an AI policy for a small business?

An AI policy is a short, plain-language document that says how your business uses AI, what gets disclosed, and who's responsible for making that call.

Not a legal essay.

Not something buried on page nine of your terms and conditions.

Something a client or customer can actually find and read in two minutes.

A solid one covers three things.

-> Where AI shows up in your business, content, customer service, product delivery, whatever applies.
-> How you disclose it, a line in a caption, a note on a chatbot, a statement on your website.
-> And who owns the decision when something new comes up, so it's not being figured out on the fly every time a new tool gets added to the stack.

A single-person consultancy running a website chatbot, using AI for social captions, and outsourcing carousel design to a VA who also uses AI tools, needs one page that covers all three.

Something like: "We use AI to support content creation and initial client enquiries. Any AI-assisted content is reviewed by a team member before publishing. Our website chat is AI-assisted, and a human reviews every booking."

That's a working policy. Doesn't need to be longer than that to do its job.
