Wayne Ink Design

Wayne Ink Design Independently founded, owned and operated, Wayne Ink Design is a freelance design and illustration business based in Madison, Wisconsin. BRAND YOU. DESIGN.

Wayne Ink Design does anything from graphic design to illustration, portraiture, woodwork and more. THIS IS WAYNE INK DESIGN, A FUSION OF ART AND DESIGN TOGETHER. Too many design firms out there skimming by on just the basics, calling blocks and triangles modern marvels and making up definitions based on abstract ideas. Wayne Ink Design doesn’t just make art and design; it brands you. I don’t just

stop at what you do, I use up to date ideas and concepts to show people who you are and why you’re the best. I find that thing that makes you unique and run with it. ILLUSTRATION AND FINE ART. Whether you want a painting of your favorite meme (yes I do that) or to get that tattoo art idea on paper (or computer) I’ll get the job done. Corporate and hipster dominate the internet; let's change that to something new. Ask and I can probably do it. WOODWORK. It's a good old fashioned way of making anything you can really think of, and I love danger, old tools, and unique concepts. ABOUT ME. Wayne Ink Design was created by Wayne Grulke-Rueter, who got his start as a designer at the tender age of five crafting toy soldiers from clay and messing around with his dad’s wood tools without permission while drinking black coffee. As an adult designer, Wayne enjoys his time drinking as little water as possible while claiming that he gets enough through coffee—nice to know some things don’t change. Wayne Ink Design is funded through blood, caffeine, and a little bit of money. If you have an idea, let's make it even better.

Did a little bit of my own Flea Market Flip - this beautiful 4-armed floor lamp was hiding under some plastic crystal lampshade hell at my favorite antique store. Small, fidgety projects aren't usually my thing, but some custom shades were just what this piece needed.

The problem? I know nothing about lampshades. I spent a good while prototyping different ideas, from origami (quick fail) to bent strips (brittle disappointment), until I caught a glimpse of light through patterned paper that brought me to this solution.

Using some leftover reclaimed black walnut from a project I did a few years ago, I constructed 16 delicate frames to hold some contrasting thick washi paper. Four of these frames affixed to one ring each, plus some of my homemade finish for a deeper color, made four warm and slightly whimsical covers for a dramatic lamp.

Love reusing things, giving things a second life, and futzing with a piece until it turns into something unique.

One of my favorite projects from 2025. I made this for a friend who needed a functional coffee table that would store knitting supplies.

We're friends, so I had a good idea of what they like and what their style is. Then I planned a design based on utility and how it interacts with style. The best thing I could think of for someone who knits is having easy access to store knitting supplies, for it to be slightly taller than the normal coffee table to make an easy-to-work on surface, and a pop-up top so you can sit at your couch and still knit.

I was also inspired by the patchwork you might see in knitting, and tried to incorporate the feel with box joints, slatting, and contrasting materials.

It's made out of carefully-selected rustic-grade cherry (which made it extremely hard to work with, but extremely rewarding for the amount of character), and straight grain ash, which was stained black. Combining these gave me the opportunity to keep true to the natural appeal of wood that has defects.

My specialty is in modern, almost experimental pieces that honor tried-and-true woodworking, so this was incredibly satisfying for me!

I named this one The Daley, after Olympic swimmer and fantastic knitter Tom Daley.

First project of 2026! Organizing personal space isn't just for clients - artists are animals that live in wreckage until they have time to focus on themselves. This bad boy is a quick scrap build to organize my papers, canvases, and drawings, made of rustic-grade wood not usually fit for client projects - old pieces of burr oak, cherry, cedar, and a pinch of Douglas fir, made stable thanks to Domino jointing. The painted cedar was so warped it twisted both ways, nothing a little wood glue, super glue, 10 clamps each, and a little kiss on the face grain couldn't fix.

Glad to be a part of building the Animal Center for Emergency and Specialty brand! I designed this logo last year - cool to see it in 3-D and on the front of their building.

2020 was WILD! It was the year I became unemployed for more than 3 months, with no source of income (unemployment checks didn't come until I started working at the coffee shop again). The frustration of applying to over 60+ design jobs with no callbacks or interviews led me to start my own damn business.

It was also the year I bought my first house...and like most people the furniture that once crowded a small apartment, dwarfs substantially in a big boi house. So after looking endlessly through the internet I decided furniture is expensive, so why not make it myself.

I started with some oak boards, and a lot of construction 2x4s. I borrowed a few tools (a lot of tools) and I went to work. And after enough screws to build an airplane, I came out with this beautiful beast.

I obsess about most of my hobbies like mushroom foraging, video games, and hiking. I learn every little nook and cranny and I try to make it as enjoyable for me as possible. Woodworking was no different, and has since metastasized into something more than just a hobby. I've started another aspect of my business to include it.
