📋 MTD for CIS subcontractors with one source of self-employment income only.

It's simpler than it sounds. 👇

1️⃣ What you submit, and when
Four times a year you send HMRC your income and expenses from the previous 3 months. That's it. No calculations, no tax to work out. Just your figures.

2️⃣ Your CIS deductions are already handled
Your contractor reports your CIS deductions to HMRC every month. You don't submit them. They automatically reduce your tax bill at the end of the year.

3️⃣ First deadline: 7 August 2026
This covers 6 April to 5 July. You need MTD-compatible software to submit. Even if you earned nothing that quarter, you still need to send it.

4️⃣ End of year: Final Declaration
This replaces your old SA return. Confirm your figures, done. Due 31 January as usual.

5️⃣ Does this apply to you?
Over £50k gross CIS income in 2024-25 (the return you filed January 2026)? Yes, from 6 April 2026.

Over £30k in 2025-26? April 2027.
Over £20k in 2026-27? April 2028.

💡 Gross = your invoiced amount before CIS is deducted. Not what landed in your account.

Other income sources? Speak to your accountant.

Still doing your CIS invoices on Excel?

From 6th April 2026 that won't cut it anymore. If you earn over £50k gross, HMRC requires digital submissions. Four times a year. Every year.
