“𝐇𝐢 𝐌𝐮𝐦, 𝐈’𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫.”😰

Small problem.
You don’t have children.

Cyber criminals are many things… but thorough isn’t always one of them.

The “Hi Mum” (or “Hi Dad”) scam relies on panic and emotion. The fraudster pretends to be your child in trouble and urgently asks for money to be transferred.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮:

• React quickly
• Don’t question the new number
• Act before you think

Even if you do have children, pause.

✔️ Call their actual number
✔️ Ask a question only they’d know
✔️ Never send money based on a text alone

𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫.

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬… 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬.

Stay alert. Stay sceptical. And maybe check with your imaginary children before sending funds.

Have a secure weekend 🔐

𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐀𝐩𝐩 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭

A long-running scam targeting WhatsApp users is circulating again and it’s catching people out.

Originally reported by Which?, the so-called “WhatsApp Gold” scam tricks users into installing malware on their phones.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬:

You receive a WhatsApp message promoting a “premium” version of the app called WhatsApp Gold, claiming it unlocks exclusive features.

🔗 The message urges you to click a link to upgrade.

📲 That link downloads malware onto your device.

There is no legitimate version of WhatsApp called “WhatsApp Gold.” It is purely a scam designed to steal data or compromise your phone.

✔️ Never click unknown links
✔️ Don’t share verification codes
✔️ Report suspicious messages within WhatsApp
✔️ Block and report suspicious senders

I had an amazing experience with Security Everywhere. They gave me four days of work experience, along with several other learning sessions that helped me develop my knowledge and gain a real insight into the work sector. Everyone was welcoming, supportive, and happy to answer questions, making the experience both enjoyable and valuable.

A special thank you to Francis West and Sheldon Reynolds for taking the time to teach and guide, their support and willingness to share their knowledge made a real difference, and I'm very grateful for the opportunity. They gave me an insight into how their systems work and how they ensure the highest level of security for the customers.

I would highly recommend Security Everywhere to every business to help avoid and deal with cyber threats.

Thank You to Francis and The rest of the Team

I do a lot of networking.

People often assume the best conversations are the ones where you're talking about your business, products or actively selling.

In my experience in business, they're usually not.

The best conversations happen when nobody is trying to sell anything.

They're the conversations about family, about raising your children, about what football team you support, what holidays you're going on and surprisingly about the challenges you face when running your business.

Those conversations build relationships which build trust and trust is usually what business is built on.

The older I get, the more I realise networking isn't really about collecting contacts, it's about connecting with people and the business part often comes later.

P.S. We also bumped into Hey Arnold at Arnold Inventory. They had one of the most interactive and entertaining game at the propertymark one event, we loved it.

Your staff might be putting client emails into AI. Would you know?

AI tools like ChatGPT are transforming the way people work.

They're helping staff draft emails, summarise documents, improve writing, and save time.

But here's a question every conveyancing firm should ask:

Would you know if a member of staff copied a client's email and pasted it into an AI tool this afternoon?

Most people aren't doing it maliciously.
In fact, they're usually trying to be more efficient.

A busy employee receives a complicated client email and thinks:

"I'll just ask AI to help me draft a response."

A few seconds later, they've pasted:

Client names, property addresses, financial information, transaction details, personal data
into a third-party AI platform.

The problem?

Many employees don't stop to consider whether they're authorised to share that information with an AI service in the first place.

For law firms, client confidentiality isn't optional.

Neither are your obligations under UK GDPR and the SRA's requirements to protect client information.

That's why every firm should be asking:

1. Do we have an AI policy?
2. Have we told staff what can and can't be entered into AI tools?
3. Have we provided approved AI solutions if we want staff to use them?
4. Do our employees understand the confidentiality risks?

AI can absolutely deliver benefits to legal practices.

But like any new technology, it needs governance, training, and clear boundaries.
Because the biggest risk isn't usually the technology itself.

It's employees using it without understanding the consequences.

Would your firm know if client information was being entered into AI tools today?

🏍️ Riding a Motorbike Without Gear is Dangerous. So is Running a Business Without Cyber Security.

It's Friday, and after a busy week in the world of cyber security, I'm looking forward to getting out on the motorbike and clearing my head.

There's something about being on two wheels that helps me switch off from emails, alerts, and the constant stream of cyber threats we deal with every day.

But there's one thing I'd never do.

Ride without the proper gear.

A helmet can feel unnecessary until you need it. The same goes for a riding jacket, gloves, and boots. You don't wear them because you're expecting an accident. You wear them because you understand the risks.

That's exactly how I view cyber security.

Many businesses don't invest in cyber protection because everything seems fine today. Their systems are working. Their staff are productive. Nothing bad has happened.

Yet.

The reality is that most businesses I speak to don't think they'll be the target of a cyber attack.........until they are.

Cyber security isn't there because you're expecting the worst. It's there to reduce the impact when something goes wrong.

Just like protective gear on a motorbike.

So as I head into the weekend and enjoy some time on the road, here's a thought:

Would you ride a motorbike without a helmet?

If the answer is no, then why run a business without the cyber security controls designed to protect it?

Have a great weekend everyone, stay safe, and make time to do something you enjoy.
