Figures released by the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) reveal that new car registrations for May were up 38.58% (8,068) compared to May 2025 (5,822). Registrations year to date are up 4.7% (83,038) on the same period last year (79,313).

Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) increased by 22.3% (2,324) compared to May last year (1,900). Year to date LCVs are up 15.01% (20,410). Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations are up 28% (265) in comparison to May 2025 (207). Year to date, HGVs are down 4.3% (1,457).

Imported Used Cars for May were up 31.2% (7,808), when compared to May 2025 (5,948). Year to date imports are up 38.2% (38,960) on 2025 (28,183).

In May 2,335 new electric cars (battery electric cars) were registered, (up 115% higher on May 2025's 1,086 registrations). 19,050 new electric cars have been registered in Ireland so far in 2026, a 53.82% increase compared to the same period in 2025, when 12,385 electric cars were registered.

Emma Mitchell, SIMI Operations Director, remarked "New Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) registrations continue to experience strong growth across all counties, with 2,335 units registered in May, up from 1,086 units in May of last year. Notably, consumers are driving this growth, accounting for 77% of BEV registrations so far this year, with incentives continuing to encourage the switch to electric vehicles. Year-to-date BEV registrations reached 19,050 units, representing a 23% market share. While BEV registrations are positive, we are now at a critical juncture to sustain the strong growth in a market that is not yet fully established. The government must capitalise on this momentum by maintaining and extending current incentives for consumers, and encourage more businesses to change to Battery Electric Vehicles".

The Ford Motor Company has announced that it will launch five all-new passenger vehicles, made in Europe, for Europe, by the end of 2029.

These vehicles will comprise of:

New member of the global Bronco family comes to Europe: This new multi-energy member of the global Bronco family is a rugged compact SUV confirmed for production at Ford’s plant in Valencia, Spain, from 2028.

· The Electric Hatch: This new small electric vehicle combines distinct design with Ford’s signature driving dynamics — injecting “race to road” capabilities into the B-segment.

· The Small Electric SUV: A dynamic, fully electric small SUV carrying the same rally-bred design language and drive dynamics in an urban-friendly package.

· Two Multi-Energy Crossovers: Two additional rally-bred crossover models will complete the new line-up by the end of 2029.

Two new commercial vehicles will also be introduced, comprising of a Ranger pick-up truck and a fully-electric Transit City van.

"We are absolutely supportive of Ford’s strsategy to go on the offensive in Europe", said Nicola Gilda, Managing Director, Peoples Automotive Group and Chair of Ford’s European Dealer Council. JCB has revealed plans to set a new land speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle, 20 years on from the JCB Dieselmax breaking the world diesel land speed record at an incredible 350.092mph.

The JCB Hydromax will use two revolutionary production engines at its core, each tuned to an astonishing 800hp. In an attempt to become the fastest hydrogen-powered car, the hydrogen internal combustion engines will drive all four wheels through a twin-transmission and clutch system – a display of real engineering prowess and a drastic step forward from the JCB Dieselmax project.

Andy Green OBE, who successfully piloted the Dieselmax 20 years ago, will be driving the vehicle. The now-retired RAF Wing Commander is no stranger to a speed record, being both the current holder of the land speed record at 763.035mph and the first person to break the sound barrier on land.

The existing record for a hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicle is 185.5mph; the hydrogen fuel cell car’s record is 303mph; and the electric vehicle’s record is 342mph.

Speaking about the ambitious proposal, Lord Anthony Bamford, JCB Chairman, remarked:

"JCB Dieselmax was always a bit of an unusual idea – but it proved a point. Putting an advanced engine into a land-speed car showed the world what it could do in a way a digger never could. It’s the same thinking with hydrogen today. If you’re serious about emissions, you have to be serious about hydrogen – and a land-speed project is the perfect way to prove it. As for the speed, we’re aiming for with JCB Hydromax – we intend to beat 350 mph".

During the week, Alan attended the Road Safety Authority Ireland Conference, which was held in partnership with the Health & Safety Authority and Vision Zero. The conference highlighted the importance of proactive fleet safety and the role technology plays in preventing roadside incidents before they happen.

A key focus was on Van Fleet Road Safety Management. Insights included a discussion of the most common defects found during roadside LCV inspections in 2025; these included tyre, brake, lighting, suspension, and steering issues.

The message throughout the day was clear: safer roads start with better visibility, stronger processes, and a preventative approach to fleet management.

RSA Director, Michael Rowland, remarked: "Driving for work remains one of the most significant occupational safety risks facing employers today. The findings presented at today’s seminar clearly demonstrate the need for organisations operating van fleets to prioritise road safety management. Employers must ensure that safe driving practices are embedded throughout their operations, supported by clear policies, training, vehicle maintenance and a culture where safety takes precedence over commercial pressures".

At ForWare, we help fleet operators stay ahead of these challenges through digital vehicle inspections, real-time compliance tracking, automated maintenance scheduling, and actionable reporting insights. Events like today reinforce how essential smart fleet technology is in supporting compliance, reducing downtime, and driving the shared goal of safer roads for everyone. Prevention, data, and collaboration are shaping the future of fleet safety — and ForWare is proud to be part of that journey.

Opel has unveiled a key project under development in its model strategy: a completely new, all-electric SUV in the important and highly competitive C-segment that would extend the current line-up. With Stellantis and Leapmotor contemplating an expansion of their partnership, the new vehicle is intended to serve as a blueprint for efficient global collaboration. Simultaneously, it would enable the German manufacturer to take a major strategic step forward in terms of electrification and scaling in the shortest possible time with sales of the newcomer expected to start as early as 2028. The new Opel C-SUV is expected to be on sale alongside the current SUV-range consisting of the Opel Grandland, Frontera and Mokka.

Opel CEO, Florian Huettl, remarked, "The partnership with Leapmotor should enable a development time of less than two years. With this, Opel is planning a further important step in the development of state-of-the-art and accessible electric vehicles for our customers".

The new vehicle would be expected to use core components of the latest Leapmotor electric architecture and battery technology, combined with Opel’s signature design, on-board experience, and chassis engineering.

"With this project, Opel would bring together German engineering excellence with global technological innovation speed", said Xavier Chéreau, Chairman of the Opel supervisory board and Stellantis Chief Human Resources & Sustainability Officer. "This innovative spirit defines the next chapter of our global collaboration with Leapmotor and Opel is taking on a pioneering role with this project".

Jaguar has announced that its next luxury four-door GT will be known as Type 01.

The '0' represents electric propulsion and zero tailpipe emissions; '1' denotes its status as the first Jaguar of a new era. The 'Type' designation unites the brand’s history of innovation in design, technology and performance with the most advanced Jaguar ever. The first of its type, with unmistakable presence achieved through an innovative new body architecture. Tri‑motor technology delivers more than 1,000PS and over 1,300Nm of torque.

'Type' naming first appeared on the Le Mans race‑winning C‑type of 1951. On the road, it came to represent two characters in one car: an engaging drive with deep reserves of power, plus refinement and composure. The E‑type and the more recent F‑TYPE are exemplars.

Rawdon Glover, Managing Director of Jaguar, commented: "We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the '1', our first car for a new chapter, a 'one of a kind!"
