Lucian Freud Benefits Supervisor Sue Tilley To Be Auctioned At Sotheby’s
https://tinyurl.com/bdd65a25 Lucian Freud’s final and most ambitious portrait of Sue Tilley (AKA’ the benefits supervisor’), completed in 1995 after nine months of sittings in his Holland Park studio, is to be offered at Sotheby’s. The painting has appeared in every major survey of his work and occupies a central place in any serious account of twentieth-century figurative painting. Yet it has never been offered for public sale. Since Joe Lewis acquired it directly from Freud’s gallerist, Bill Acquavella, in 1996, the painting has been part of the Lewis Collection, one of the great private accumulations of modern figurative art, seen by the public only in museum contexts. In June, it comes to Sotheby’s London with an estimate of £25 million to £35 million. Sotheby's

Lost Leonora Carrington Painting Surfaces in Spain https://tinyurl.com/3ca4wa8v A painting by Leonora Carrington that has been missing from public knowledge for decades has been located in Spain, in the possession of the family of the psychiatrist who treated her during one of the most documented and least fully understood periods of her life. Villa Pilar, completed in 1940 during Carrington’s six-month stay at the Peña Castillo sanatorium near Santander, will make its public debut at the Freud Museum in London as part of Leonora Carrington: The Symptomatic Surreal, the first exhibition to bring together the artworks she produced during her hospitalisation. The discovery marks a significant moment in Carrington scholarship and lends the exhibition the weight it could not otherwise carry. Freud Museum London

Roni Horn Conceptual Artist To The Core Hauser & Wirth – Sue Hubbard https://tinyurl.com/ch45p42b Roni Horn is a conceptual artist to her core. Her work is often enigmatic, loved by the cognoscenti who understand the rules of its making and misunderstood by many of those who don’t.

Gordon Cheung: Many Worlds One Mind – Close Gallery https://tinyurl.com/yc857cp5 Gordon Cheung works across several disciplines simultaneously, drawing on the tensions between them as a generative resource. The London-born artist, whose parents came from Hong Kong, has spent the past two decades developing a practice that moves with unusual fluency across Chinese philosophy and aesthetics, European art history, the language of global finance and the visual grammar of digital technology. The results are works that, at first encounter, look like classical landscapes and, on closer examination, reveal themselves to be something altogether more complex and contemporary.

In Minor Keys A Cacophony At 61st Venice Biennale – Miranda Carroll A great deal has already been said about the cacophony in Venice during preview days, and in my mind, there was also a visual cacophony in the central exhibition, which seemed at times overcrowded and confusing. Perhaps that was the point – not to be confined by curatorial dogma but to wander through and take it all in. So, what to make of this? La Biennale di Venezia

Sainsbury Centre Secures £91.2 Million Gift From Gatsby Foundation https://tinyurl.com/mtwx4845 One of the most architecturally significant museum buildings in Britain has received a transformative funding injection. The Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia in Norwich has received £91.2 million from Lord David Sainsbury through the Gatsby Foundation, his charitable organisation, a donation its executive director, Jago Cooper, has described as securing the venue’s future. The Gift is among the largest single donations to a regional cultural institution in recent British history, and it arrives at a moment when the Sainsbury Centre is preparing to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its founding commission.

Winston Churchill can paint! Who knew?
Sir Winston Churchill (1874 – 1965) was one of the great statesmen of the twentieth century – the UK’s Prime Minister during the Second World War, and a Member of Parliament for 62 years. He was also a passionate and prolific painter. In painting, he found respite from public pressures, and a lifelong source of joy.

The first major retrospective of Sir Winston Churchill’s paintings since his death, this exhibition at The WallaceCollection brings together more than 50 of his works. More than half are from private collections, rarely accessible to the public. Opens 23 May.
