Using the wrong power supply for an external hard drive can lead to severe consequences for the device, the stored data, and even connected systems. External hard drives require specific voltage and amperage levels to operate safely. Mismatched power supplies can cause overvoltage, undervoltage, or improper current delivery, all of which can damage sensitive internal components.
An overvoltage situation, where the power supply delivers more voltage than required, can fry the drive's circuit board, rendering the device inoperable.
