🔥 Apprentice Series: Season 2 — Episode 12: AI as a Force for Good

I’ve always believed that AI can be a force for good, but it wasn’t until I worked with a team developing an AI-powered system to detect early warning signs of mental health challenges that I truly understood its potential. 💡

At first, the problem seemed overwhelming.

How do you identify individuals who may be struggling before a crisis occurs?

How do you make sense of large volumes of data and transform them into meaningful insights that can help people?

The answer was to approach the challenge one step at a time.

We broke the problem into manageable parts, gathered and analyzed relevant data, and applied machine learning techniques to identify patterns that would otherwise be difficult to detect.

The outcome was remarkable. 🤖

Our system was able to identify high-risk individuals with a high degree of accuracy, helping support teams intervene earlier and more effectively.

But the real success was not the technology.

The real success was the impact.

People received support sooner.
Potential crises were prevented.
Families received help when they needed it most.
And in some cases, lives were positively changed because action could be taken earlier.

That experience taught me an important lesson:

AI is not just about algorithms, models, or code.

AI is about people.

It’s about solving meaningful problems.
It’s about creating opportunities.
It’s about improving lives.
It’s about making a tangible difference in the world around us.

As you continue building your own projects, I encourage you to think beyond the technology.

Ask yourself:
💭 Who benefits from this solution?
💭 What problem am I truly solving?
💭 How will this improve someone's life?

Because the most impactful innovations are not measured by how advanced they are.

They are measured by the positive change they create.

Applications are now open for MSc and PhD scholarships under the EU-funded SHE-CREEDS Project — Strengthening Higher Education for Climate-Responsive Agriculture, Energy-Efficient Technologies and Digital Innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The project is hosted at NM-AIST in collaboration with four other African partner institutions. For Cohort 1, there are:
• 6 PhD positions
• 10 MSc positions
This is a great opportunity for aspiring researchers and professionals interested in climate-responsive agriculture, energy-efficient technologies, and digital innovation.
