When I knew RAG, it stood for Red, Amber, Green, representing High, Medium, and Low Risk severity; now it stands for Retrieval-Augmented Generation, and it exists for one important reason - to reduce AI hallucinations.

I believe this is true in art as well as in many other areas of life. We are a software development house – not a big one, but nevertheless substantial. We’re not everyone’s cup of tea because we have views on most things, and we won't necessarily do what clients want without a robust discussion first. We will, however, go the extra mile for the clients who love us, which is why they stay with us.
Why do we have a view about most things? We have assembled a mix of some of the very best people from other major disciplines that complement software development. You can’t create a risk management tool without a solid understanding of mathematics. You can keep abreast of artificial intelligence and the rubbish it sometimes produces without smart data scientists. We work with around 9 law firms, big and small. Even if you don’t run a risk register as a formal discipline, there isn’t a competent businessman in the world, big or small, who doesn’t know the pitfalls and dangers when running a business. Essentially, they run risk registers in their heads.
Small, medium, and large organisations mostly maintain risk registers on spreadsheets, which is a chore and little more than a compliance necessity. Does it help build the business? Can you make sensible business decisions based on the data? Sometimes yes, but mostly no.
Six years ago, we decided to build a solution that linked changes in severity to changes in financial exposure. Yes, business decisions are fundamentally driven by financial considerations, and very few minor decisions are made on risk severity alone.
During the first four years of development, we theorised a solution that, when tested in a real-world setting, proved unfit for purpose. We had done a lot of good work, but it wasn’t until we partnered with a couple of major law firms and began working with qualified risk professionals who manage international risk registers that we realised we were only 60 per cent of the way there.
The system grew by adding new functionality and an amended workflow, and once the solution was fit for purpose, we theorised further to improve it.
If you have a budget to spend, where do you spend it first? Just because a risk is high doesn’t necessarily mean the cost of mitigation is irrelevant. You need to know what “bang do I get for my bucks?” Two mitigations may cost the same, but one is more effective at reducing severity than the other.

Well, it’s a big deal for us!
Ghost Digital & Data is metamorphosing into a new, younger, and more energetic Ghost, with new ideas, new technology, and AI tools that were not available to us until recently.
We’ve now finished developing our Risk Management System (v1.1) in conjunction with a major law firm, we are finalizing a Strategic Planning Tool to help organisations achieve their long-term visions and goals, and we are making all our solutions accessible to people with disabilities.
