๐Ÿ”ด This is why 69% of 4,464 executives of organizations with annual revenues of US$1 billion are worried about unsustainable cost increases across different components of cybersecurity protection over the last two years.

Looking at a broad range of 17 different components of cybersecurity protection, 60 % of respondents reported cost increases on all 17 components over the last two years.

(Check for the list of components ranked by biggest cost increases in comments)

A significant number, almost one quarter, reported cost increases of more than 25 % a year across all 17 components.

The three areas of cybersecurity protection with the largest increases in cost are network security, threat detection and security monitoring.

Reflecting these trends, 69% of respondents said staying ahead of attackers is a constant battle and the cost is unsustainable. - State of the Cybersecurity Report 2020, Accenture.

If cost is unsustainable, the best thing to do is to spend your cybersecurity budget on solutions that stop more attacks, find breaches faster, fix breaches faster and reduce breach impact.

Unfortunately, evaluating a set of solutions on these scales are challenging & costlier than said.

66% of C-level executives consider open-source software (OSS) before other options. Any guess? What % of the executives plan to monitor open source code for security vulnerabilities?

Yes, it's great that OSS is becoming the enterprise's favourite kind of software.

It's nice to know that businesses have finally seen the value in the open-source software development model since the last decade.

But OSS is like any other tool. If you use it badly, it will end up hurting you.

In March of 2017, a vulnerability, dubbed CVE-2017-5638, was discovered in Apache Struts, an open-source development framework used by Equifax caused a data breach that affected 143 million people

more than 40% of the population of the United States.

As said above, 66% of C-level executives consider open-source software (OSS) before other options.

Sadly, more than 50% are not satisfied with their ability to understand known security vulnerabilities in open-source components.

making it worst, only 17 per cent of respondents in Future of Open Source Survey by Black Duck Software & North Bridge Venture Partners, plan to monitor open source code for security vulnerabilities.

Do small businesses still donโ€™t see cybersecurity as a major concern?

Recent studies have shown that the average cost of a data breach to small businesses can range from $120,000 to $1.24 million, and that's strictly limited to a small business market.

Stepping outside the small business filter, IBM's 2019 Cost of a Data Breach Report recently found that the average cost of a data breach was $3.92 million and that breaches cost smaller businesses more (relative to their size) than they cost large businesses.

Yet only 20% of respondents from Q1 2020 CNBC/SurveyMonkey Small Business Survey say they plan to invest in cybersecurity software.

So the first question that comes to mind is - Do small businesses still donโ€™t see cybersecurity as a major concern?

And We got this answered for you in the second episode of by CyberPal that discusses whether we should be making investments in cyber security by choice or by force.

On average, people who use social media have about eight social media accounts. Do you use different passwords for all of them?

In the US alone, an average email address is associated with about 130 online accounts. And with that comes the heart of the matter: The passwords.

Most people use the same password or a few passwords for all their online accounts.

And if one of these online accounts is compromised and a hacker got hold of their email ID and password, it's like finding the online master key of that person (if they use the same email and password for their online accounts).

The hacker can try the email/password pair on all the sites you are likely to use, i.e., all major social media sites, all online bank accounts, major e-commerce sites, etc.

You can imagine how much damage they can deal if you donโ€™t figure it out and change your credentials at the right time.

The damage can be something as mild as someone using your credentials for free streaming or as devastating as your financial or social records leaked online.

This is called credential stuffing. They stuff your credentials into every website (or rather, an automated program/bot does that).

In 2018, most credential stuffing attempts were aimed at e-commerce sites.

Technology alone will not solve the risk of supply chain-based cyber attacks, why?

One of the biggest challenges of supply chain attacks is that they often go unnoticed.

The problem with supply chain security is that as you broaden the scope of your subcontractors, their outsourced suppliers, etc, you have less and less visibility, understanding and control.

This makes supply chain attacks so impactful as it takes a long time for organisations to detect these kinds of activities.

The answer is not only in technology. Technology may be one part of the puzzle, but in order for supply chain security to work

a company needs to focus on three core elements: People, process and technology.

What else?

70% of CISOs and security buyers believed cybersecurity budgets will shrink by the end of 2020 but plan to ask for significant increases in 2021.

Here is what's actually going inside of CISOs mind ๐Ÿ‘‡

For corporate security operations centres, the cost of securing the fundamentals could reduce budgets for more advanced threat-intelligence upgrades, behavioural analytics, and other tooling.

Based on these trends, CISOs and cybersecurity operations teams will continue to spend more on perimeter security, next-gen identity and access controls, automation, securities for third parties.

To address budget constraints, CISOs are considering extending how long they use security applications before upgrading, especially for hardware-based services (such as firewalls).

They also will prioritize paying for new features or patches for only the most critical applications.

Selling cyber security is going to be more challenging, agree?

Out of 74% of middle school girls who show interest in STEM, only 0.4% of high school girls choose to major in computer science*.

This is why there are only 24% of women in Cybersecurity workforce, AGREE?

The threats and the risks are rising at an alarming scale and as Cybersecurity Workforce Study suggests, businesses need to fulfil the shortage of about four million professionals.

If such a gender disparity prevails in the workforce, definitely it is going to be a difficult task for businesses to meet the gaps.

Why do only 0.4% of high school girls choose to major in computer science?

Is this the lack of female role models and encouragement to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers?
