Remember when Charlie Brooker was absolutely ripping television, news and popular culture to shreds on the BBC?

Starting with Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe on BBC Four in 2006, Weekly Wipe ran from 2013 until the regular series ended after 2015, while the annual Wipe specials continued until the 2016 edition.

Brooker’s growing commitments to Black Mirror and other projects meant there just wasn’t enough time to keep producing them at the same pace. He even joked in 2017 that making the 2016 Wipe had “ruined” his Christmas 😭

Brooker did eventually return for the brilliant Antiviral Wipe during lockdown in 2020, proving that perhaps the world had finally become strange enough to need him back - and that is probably even more true today 😅

Sportacus wasn’t just LazyTown’s impossibly athletic hero - he was played by the man who created the whole phenomenon, Icelandic aerobics champion Magnús Scheving!

Before LazyTown became the colourful TV classic we all remember, its story began with Scheving’s 1995 children’s book Áfram Latibær, which was adapted into the hugely popular Icelandic stage play Áfram Latibær! in 1996.

Scheving played the original Sportacus on stage, helping turn his message of healthy eating, exercise and an active lifestyle into a worldwide phenomenon when LazyTown eventually made its way to television. 🎭➡️📺

On 16 September 2007, Ricky Gervais won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Extras at the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards, but Ricky wasn’t there to collect his trophy. So presenters Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert jokingly handed the Emmy to their “good friend” Steve Carell, who ran onstage and celebrated as if he’d won it himself 😂

Fast-forward to 21 September 2008, at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards, and Ricky finally returned to settle the score. After accusing Carell of stealing an Emmy he “couldn’t actually win one of his own”, Ricky marched into the audience, repeatedly demanded, “Gimme my Emmy!”, and eventually tickled Steve until he produced the trophy from beneath his seat. 😂

In 2007, a 13-year-old busker named George Sampson first stepped onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage, but he was ultimately stopped short of the live semi-finals.

A year later, at just 14 years old, he returned with bigger moves, more determination and one of the most unforgettable performances in BGT history a dancing through a downpour to Mint Royale’s remix of “Singin’ in the Rain.”

The iconic routine was inspired by the 2005 Volkswagen Golf GTI advert, which used the same track and rain-soaked street-dance concept.

George’s version proved even more unforgettable, helping him become the winner of Britain’s Got Talent in 2008 - changing his and his family’s lives 🌧️

Ricky Gervais met Stephen Merchant while he was working at Xfm radio, hiring him as an assistant. The chemistry they built there is what set the stage for The Office, Extras, and later The Ricky Gervais Show and An Idiot Abroad.

Interestingly, Xfm is also where they met Karl Pilkington, who was a producer at the station when Gervais and Merchant returned after their initial successes.

However, nothing either of the pair have put out solo has matched what they were able to achieve together. Agree or disagree?
