“Beta, ghar ke kaam nahi seekhogi toh kya hoga?” The unofficial background music of every South Asian girl’s childhood. 😭
The way it was said, you’d think adulthood was one long cooking competition and one oddly shaped roti could cancel your entire future.
Growing up, society convinces us that a girl’s worth is tied to how well she can cook, clean, manage a home and eventually become the “perfect wife.” Somehow, these everyday life skills get turned into warnings, expectations and pressure instead of being taught as tools for independence.
Then I moved abroad and started managing everything myself. I cooked my own meals, bought groceries, cleaned up after myself and somehow survived, even when my rotis looked more like geographical maps than perfect circles. 😂
And the funniest part? I realised I actually love cooking. And suddenly the kitchen becomes my little therapy room🩷
Cooking was never the terrifying responsibility it was made out to be. It can be comforting, creative and one of the nicest ways to take care of yourself and the people you love.
Maybe that’s part of healing too. Unlearning the pressure attached to the things we were taught to fear and choosing what they mean to us on our own terms.
So, girl to girl: learn to cook because it gives you independence, because it can bring you peace, because feeding yourself is an act of self love, not because your worth depends on how perfectly you can “manage a home.”
This illustration is my playful take on the dramatic warnings so many of us grew up hearing, only to discover that the scariest part was the build up. 🍳✨
