A domain controller reporting unexpected shutdowns after every patch night is easy to ignore... until it isn’t....

What looks like a minor annoyance can quietly lead to AD corruption, SYSVOL issues, or DNS failures. By the time those appear, tracing it back to a Hyper-V timing issue during Windows Update isn’t obvious.

We’ve broken down the root cause and a straightforward fix here:

If your servers are showing odd behaviour after patching, it’s worth taking a closer look.

⚠️ A quick real-world reminder from this week:

I was contacted for help after someone lost access to their email account. It had been taken over, and the attacker used it to send phishing emails to all their contacts.

Sadly, a few people took the bait and ended up losing money.

Situations like this are more common than people think.

💡If you take one thing away: avoid reusing passwords across accounts. Use something unique for each login, and a password manager makes this much easier.

💡 Tech Tip of the Day 💡

No business is too small to be targeted

A common misconception is “we’re too small for hackers to care.”

In reality, attackers don’t start by picking a company - they cast a wide net using automated scans and phishing campaigns, looking for any vulnerability.

Once they find a weakness, that’s when it becomes a targeted attack.

Smaller businesses often get caught out simply because:

⚠️ Security basics aren’t fully in place
⚠️ Staff aren’t trained to spot threats
⚠️ Systems aren’t regularly updated

The takeaway: It’s not about your size - it’s about your exposure.

✅ Strong passwords, updates, backups, and awareness go a long way.

Cybersecurity isn’t about size. It’s about readiness.

💡 Tech Tip of the Day 💡

Never reuse passwords across work systems!

If attackers gain access to one account (for example, email), they will immediately try the same password on other services like CRM systems, cloud storage, or admin portals.

One compromised password can quickly turn into access to your entire business environment.

• Use a unique password for every system
• Store them in a password manager
• Enable MFA wherever possible

A few extra seconds creating a unique password can prevent a major security incident.

💡 Tech Tip of the Day 💡

Shut down is not the same as reboot.

✅ Recommendation: Reboot your computer at least once a week to keep things running smoothly.

Many people think turning their computer off is the same as restarting it. Years ago, that was true, but with modern versions of Windows, it’s no longer the case.

Windows now uses a feature called Fast Startup. When you choose Shut Down, the system actually saves part of its state so it can start faster next time. Convenient, but it also means some issues can stay in memory.

A Restart, on the other hand, fully resets the system:
• clears memory
• reloads drivers
• restarts services
• starts the operating system fresh

That’s why a simple reboot often fixes:
• slow performance
• network problems
• printers disappearing
• applications behaving oddly

Sometimes the simplest IT advice is still the most effective.

🔹 Managed IT: proactive monitoring, fixed monthly cost, fewer surprises

🔹 Ad-hoc IT: reactive support, pay-as-you-go, unpredictable bills

If you’re not sure which model fits your business, this guide explains it:
