Claude Shannon is not a name as familiar as Alan Turing, but his work on logic circuits (the building blocks of any computer), signal processing and cryptography earned him the title 'father of information theory'.

A war time contact with Turing impressed him and he proved that one-time pads could produce unbreakable codes. However, much of his work, like Turing's was classified until long after the war had ended.

Claude died in 2001 but it still seems fitting that we celebrate his contributions on what would have been his birthday.

Technical innovation on the internet, which drive the standards to make sure it all works together, are controlled by individual Request for Comments (RFC) documents. These document the initial ideas and are then developed as those with expertise comment to make the idea better. Not all RFCs become standards but nearly all of the standards our technology relies on started life as RFCs. There are over 9000 at the time of writing.

The RFC system was invented by Steve Crocker and he published RFC 1 on April 7th. 1969. Each year we publish a little Happy Birthday message because we know the impact this has had on the whole world!

On 15th. January 2001 Dries Buytaert released the message board project he had been working on as an open source project. The Drupal content management system was born.

Today Drupal powers well over half a million websites including all of those developed by us and our partners in the I-ntarsia framework. It is one of the most successful open source projects in history and has a huge number of developers working constantly to make it better. We are delighted to be a part of that family.
