I hope you're all enjoying your weekend🍺 A customer wanted to upgrade his original 2011 Windows 7 desktop PC to a more modern Windows 11 PC preserving all his apps and data.
As the PC is used mainly for office, Web browsing and emails, I went with the below spec.
Asus Prime B760m motherboard
Intel I3 14100 cpu
16gb 3200mhz ddr4 memory
Crucial 500gb ssd
ATX midi case with a DVD bay (The customer wanted a DVD drive installed)
Be Quiet 550w psu
Be Quiet cpu cooler
Wifi Card
There's a lot of prep work to prepare the Windows upgrades as it all has to be done manually.
Firstly the original hard drive is cloned and removed just incase😬, the cloned drive is then fitted to the original PC, from here it is upgraded to Windows 8, 8.1 and then 10. Missing any versions, the upgrade will not keep the apps and data👍
All upgrades to 10 were successful 👌, from here the drive is prepared for Windows 11, the file system is converted to GPT from MBR and also configured to boot into safe mode on the next boot to allow Windows to update the Sata IDE driver to Sata AHCI for the new motherboard👍
Once the new PC was built, it POSTED first time😎, the bios was updated to the latest version and my cloned drive temporarily fitted for the next phase. The PC booted into safe mode in UEFI mode with secure boot and TPM 2.0 enabled🥳. From here safe mode boot is switched off and the PC rebooted perfectly to desktop now using the AHCI driver👌.
I then cloned this drive to the new M2 Crucial 500gb ssd, removing my sata cloned drive, again the PC booted perfectly to desktop, lastly from here, the upgrade to 11, all went through with no problems, all the driver and Windows updates applied, Google chrome updated to the latest version and office 2007 was upgraded to office 2021, keeping all the outlook data and email accounts intact 😎
I installed the new PC for the customer who was extremely happy with it, along with all the work undertaken to achieve what he wanted😁
Job done🍺
