The businesses doing best in Essex right now aren't the best at their trade.

They're the easiest to find and the easiest to book.

That's an uncomfortable thing to say out loud, because it means the best plumber in town might be third in line behind two blokes who are just easier to Google.

You can't do much about how good your competitors are. You can absolutely do something about being easy to find.

DM me your business name if you want to know where you currently stand.

Genuine question for the local business owners on here.

When someone recommends you in a Facebook group and a stranger goes looking for you — what do they find?

A website? A Google listing? A page you last posted on in 2023?

Because that ten seconds of looking is where most of you lose the job. They can't find you, so they scroll to the next name in the comments.

Have a look at what comes up when you Google your own business name. Genuinely worth two minutes of your Saturday.

"Conor created me a website, very happy with the outcome. He stayed in contact with me the entire time and was happy to change things that I wasn't sure on. I highly recommend him, very friendly and professional."

— Jaycee West

The line I care about there isn't "very happy with the outcome". It's "stayed in contact the entire time".

Because the most common story I hear from local businesses is the opposite. Paid someone, the site was half-finished, and then the bloke went quiet.

If that's happened to you, DM me. Happy to have a look at where you're up to.

Spent this morning building a website for a business that doesn't know it yet.

That's how I work. I pick a local business, build them a proper site, then send it over and ask if they want it.

Sounds daft. But nobody can picture what their website could look like — they can only picture what it might cost. So I take that bit out of the equation and just show them.

Worst case they say no and I've had an hour's practice.

Best case they get a website they'd been putting off for three years.

Free thing you can do in the next ten minutes that beats most websites:

Fill in your Google Business Profile properly.

Not half of it. All of it.

— Every service you offer, written how people actually search for them
— Your real opening hours
— Photos of real jobs, not stock images
— The towns you cover, in the description

Most local businesses fill in about 40% of it and then wonder why they never come up in the map results.

It's free and it takes ten minutes. Do that before you spend a penny on anything else.

Built a site recently for an electrician whose dad got in touch on his behalf.

He wanted two things: cover the local area, and cover the wider region. Domestic work and commercial work, clearly separated so people could find the bit that applied to them.

That's the whole brief. And it's the right brief.

Most local businesses are invisible online not because they're bad at what they do, but because nothing on their site tells Google what they do or where they do it.

Want to know what you'd currently show up for? DM me your business name and I'll have a look.

Your website isn't losing you customers.

Not having one is.

I speak to local businesses every week who are turning over decent money on word of mouth alone. Good tradesmen, fully booked, no complaints.

Then their mate stops recommending them, or the local Facebook group goes quiet for a month, and suddenly the phone doesn't ring.

Word of mouth is brilliant right up until the day it isn't. A website is the thing that keeps working when the recommendations dry up.

If you're relying entirely on people remembering your name — DM me. I'll tell you honestly whether you need a site or not.
